just like women are cheaper than men because they live longer heather lives than men in general.
There was a change here in the UK recently. Women used to get cheaper car insurance (which all drivers must have here) because they have less accidents. Someone challenged this under the anti-sex discrimination law and won. Insurance companies are no longer allowed to discount on the basis of gender. Sadly the result was that they simply raised premiums for woman to the male rate!
Actually pipe smokers have a longer life expectancy
I've read this in several places, but with the following disclaimer; The types of cancer that Pipe smokers tend to suffer from are more readily treated with surgery than those suffered by cigarette smokers. This effects the figures as the pipe smoker tends to survive the cancer more often. So, living longer says nothing about health or the quality of that life after surgery!
Well, I didn't get any quotes on how much difference there is per month.
Could you ask your insurance broker if you would have to inform them of any changes and give as examples, starting smoking a pipe, or taking up sky diving as a hobby or changing job? You would then know where you stood with your policy without flagging up that you have been a smoker.

Been there done that insurance thing Hobie. I had a guy show up at my house to draw blood and have me pee in a cup. I had a heads up this was coming so I cleaned up my act a bit and went back to my old ways as soon as the guy pulled out of the drive way. :puffy:

Well, I wouldn't lie about it, and I'm going to be paying almost 30% extra after the first of the year for it. One thing you have to consider, if the insurance is being provided by your employer, and you test positive after declaring to be a non tobacco user, they can possibly terminate you for providing false information to the company.

Thanks guys for a very informative thread. I strongly suspect issues surrounding life / health insurance will become matters of increasing importance in the near future.

The insurance is not through my employer, as I have zero coverage through them....it is worthless, so I'm on my wife's health insurance. This is just an independent Life insurance policy.
