This honestly was pretty impactful to all of us living near the Great Lakes. I usually shed a tear when Wisconsin Public Radio plays the song and states the names of the sailors who perished, ringing a bell for each one. While I was born a couple years after the boat went down, the event still resonates.
Unless you come and visit, you’ll never truly understand how vast and powerful these lakes are, especially Lake Superior.

I spent my kid years in Duluth and northern Minnesota. Those rare summers where Superior warmed up enough to swim in there was a spot that was about chest deep that went out a fair distance from shore before the bottom dropped out. You could reach out with your foot and feel the undertow. I did that twice before my mom found out and reamed me a new one while telling me about people who would get sucked down into the depths of the lake and never seen again.…Very true
