I recently bought one of the almost 100 year old Brulor pipes from SP. I have tried using it a couple times and it just tastes terrible. Last night I tried some Orlik Golden Slice in it and it tasted very chemically and my tongue felt like it had a coating afterwards. This was my third bowl in this pipe.
Does anyone know if these have some sort of inside bowl treatment that needs to be removed before use? Or am I missing something on this old briar?
I think I am going to soak the inside with 151 rum and lightly sand to try and help it.
If the next bowl tastes this terrible this pipe is going in the trash.

Some bowl coatings can taste like :poop:
Wrap a piece of sandpaper around your finger and get rid of it. Gently.

Had the same experience with a brand new pipe sometime ago. Getting rid of the coating fixed the problem

Hope it smokes well for you after that
Happy smokes puffy

I’ll bet its oxides inside the stem. Get some chirchwarden pipecleaners and put toothpaste on it. Secure one side of the pipecleaner to something, and thread on the stem, and work that thing back and forth till your arm falls off. Rince, repeat.

That should take care of it, but it does take some elbow grease.

I think Brulors come with acrylic stems.
It might say vulcanite in the description but the one I bought, and returned, was for sure acrylic.
The same goes for Ropp pipes. They all say they have vulcanite stems and all of my 4 came with acrylic stems.

I wish my Brulor was acrylic. It is the only vulcanite stem among my dozen pipes. I'd be happy if Ropp comes with acrylic stem. The stem material was the only thing that stopped me from getting one.

If it was painted black inside its a bowl coating and some of them are terrible tasting for several smokes.
I often remove them. Some will come out with a wet paper towel. Some require a little sanding.

I make it a point to not smoke mild blend through a new pipe. It spoils New Pipe Day. If you smoke burley or similiar grab some of that once you give it a good cleaning.

Wait, why is Auxsender replying for PapaCoolDown?
Just conveying my experience with Brulor pipes specifically and mischaracterized pipes on Smoking Pipes generally in an effort to say that maybe the stem on his Brulor is not vulcanite and therefore might not be oxidized on the inside of the stem.
