    Sound Off, Lurkers!

I am a lurker for the same reasons many have already posted... I come here to learn, and feel I don't have much to contribute being a relatively new pipe smoker (2 years). But, since I've been cajoled into actually posting, I'll add this little story: I was smoking my pipe outside a Cracker...

    Xikar Resource vs. Pipeline

I've had a Resource since January. Xikar has replaced it three times in eight months. First, it stopped lighting. Second, it fell apart. Third, it would leak all of the butane in about 8 hours. Each time, they sent me a new one. On a positive note, their customer service is awesome. I just...

    School Full of Nazis....

Seems to me that a lot of stuff happens on college campuses that is against the rules. And college students seem to be the most tolerant of other people's choices, even if they don't do it themselves. If the policy is going to be student-enforced, I'd wait and see what happens. It may not be...

    Highs and Lows

This is one thread where I'm going to have to disagree with the majority. You can never make a hasty decision based on one argument, especially when the other party is pregnant. So, here's my advice: Be patient with her and help as much as possible during the "nesting" phase (where she gets...

    Oxidation on a New Pipe

Thanks, Roth. I assume this place doesn't sell many pipes. It was 99% focused on cigars with two closed display cases of pipes. Each had fluorescent lights at the top. So, the heat, light and New Orleans humidity probably contributed to it. All of the stems seems a little faded, especially...

    Oxidation on a New Pipe

I've developed a tradition of trying to buy a new pipe whenever my wife and I travel. We recently went to New Orleans, and there was a B&M a few blocks from where we were staying on Magazine Street. But, the selection was scarce and consisted mainly of Petersons and an off-brand I had not...

If I Don't Like It It's No Good

Personally, I prefer to read a variety of opinions--good or bad--about blends and pipes. If one person says a particular blend is manna from heaven and ten others say it tastes like poop on a cracker with a hint of Ben-Gay and Robitussin, I'm probably not going to try it. Almost everything...

    Storing Tobacco?

Everyone's advice about the jars is correct. I would add that it might be more prudent to buy smaller quantities. Four ounces of a blend will usually fill a pint sized jar quite nicely. Some of the first jars I filled and labeled thinking they would be my go-to blends have now slipped out of...

Which Pipe Would You Give as a Gift?

Savinelli's Bing's Favorite is in your price range and has a golf club and ball insignia stamped on it. Even if he has one already, it will show that you were thoughtful enough to combine both of his passions into one gift.

Thought I Was A Nic Wimp But...

So, I read this thread this morning while at work. Then, at lunch I went to my local B&M and there on the wall was a tin of Nightcap. So I bought it. Normally things don't affect me like others say they will, i.e. Benadryl, drinking caffeine before bed, etc. After I finished a bowl at lunch...

    How I Enjoy a Pipe :D

I've got a garage that I converted to a wood shop. Early each morning, I'll brew a cup of coffee, open the garage door, fire up the pipe and watch the sun rise. Any other pipe I might have during the day has to be worked around the family schedule.

Empty Tobacco Tins - Any Creative Uses?

My wife takes my tins and uses them for sewing notions--pins, buttons, etc. I never have to worry about what to do with them. She's usually eyeing them before I get done.

    Taste Different in a Meerschaum

Thanks for the information. I will give it a few more chances and see if it gets better. Even though it had not been smoked before, I'm sure it had been stored for several years. Does the material in meerschaum perhaps absorb odors like baking soda does?

    Taste Different in a Meerschaum

So far, my pipe collection has consisted of only briar pipes. I recently got a pipe with a meerschaum insert from my dad's collection. It had never been smoked. I had read never to try a new tobacco in a new pipe. So, I chose a tobacco that I had smoked many, many times before. And...

    I Didn't Realize I Was A Snob, But I Am . . .

A couple of years ago, we were involved in a wreck with a drunk driver. He was arrested and sat in jail for three weeks because his girlfriend and his family would not bail him out. Then, the DA called me and said that they weren't interested in pursuing the case. They asked if I would accept...

    New Members, Introduce Yourself!

Hello, Everyone. My name is Mike, and I've been smoking pipes for about six months. Of course, I've been bitten by the bug in a bad way. I've already "collected" sixteen pipes and tried probably twice as many blends. I've been a lurker around here for several months, reading and learning. I...
