    How to Re-Hydrate Pipe Tobacco

I prefer not to wet the tobacco directly, using any method, spraying, sprinkling, whatever. I may be too fastidious, but I do worry about what can happen to wet tobacco, not that I've ever had any issue with it. But I get a little square of aluminum foil and make it into a slightly bowled shape...

I Need to Deep Clean My Pipes

For a truly sour or funky pipe, hot water is not likely to cut it. Residues are oily and water and oil don't mix. I'm not arguing that it does not work on your own pipes, I'm not disputing that. But it's likely to be a waste of time on truly nasty pipes. The pipe cleaner with alcohol in the...

School me on Keeping Briar Looking New

I'm not quite in the drop your pipe so it looks well-loved camp, but I really don't like the hard shine buffed carnauba puts on pipes. That's why I favor the Howard's Butcher block stuff, I like a clean, but matte shine, not one you can see your reflection in, that looks like an automotive...

School me on Keeping Briar Looking New

A Stanwell i just used the butcher block stuff on the stummel and obsidian oil on the stem. Not as shiny as buffed carnauba, but I like it this way. Easy maintenance, too. Buffed with that pink microfiber cloth on the left.

School me on Keeping Briar Looking New

Ive used the Howard’s Feed ‘N Wax for years on my gunstocks. On a whim I used this on my pipes in the last couple weeks and have been pleased with the results. It’s food grade mineral oil, beeswax, and carnauba, I just apply and buff off with an old t-shirt.

    Hello from Philly Area

Title edited for brevity and caps. "returning to pipes but really a noob" is now placed here. -jpm I've smoked a pipe off and on since college (I'm 65), have been mostly a cigar guy all my life. But this fall I got back into the pipe and have fallen down the rabbit hole. There is a small but...

The First Blend That Got You Into Pipe Smoking

First tobaccos: My uncle started me on Borkum Riff original, and Troost Special Cavendish, both drugstore blends in the 1970s. First eye-opener or aha blend for me was Iwan Ries Three Star Royale, discovered in college, loved it. Wasn't so popular with the ladies, though. These days, if I'm...

You're an Idiot if You Smoke Pipes More Than $50!

Funny, I just posted similar stuff in comments on the article. I own a Nighthawk, but I also own box-stock utilitarian guns, too. They all shoot well, and I see guys win IDPA matches with just about any gun you can imagine. You pays your money and you takes your choice! The XO in coke guy...

Stem - Question on Oxiclean & magic eraser

Yes, 0000 steel wool is fine, trust me on that one. Just the other day I used it with some gun lube to take some rust pits out of some blued WWII-era M1 Carbine magazines for a friend. Plus I went after it with Barkeepers Friend and Flitz afterwards. The stem looks great! 0000 steel wool is used...

Stem - Question on Oxiclean & magic eraser

Well, I quit my griping, got in front of the television tonight with some 600 grit wet/dry paper, some 0000 steel wool, some Barkeepers Friend and some Flitz, and after a couple hours got a pretty good result! You are right, it takes a lot of time, but it does work. Thanks for the tips and the...

Stem - Question on Oxiclean & magic eraser

Thanks, but no, I have to do my own work. I'm sure you have pipe stems to work on of your own, and I'd feel a bit guilty. Thanks, though! I took them to Holts today and he said he buffed them (for free!) and they don't stink or taste bad now, but they are still not smooth and shiny. Back to the...

Stem - Question on Oxiclean & magic eraser

I'm done. Two hours of this using Barkeeper's Friend, magic erasers, and Flitz. It's shiny but still stinks and has a little sour taste still. I'm looking at the other two and the hell with it. I'm driving down to Holt's in Philadelphia tomorrow, they'll buff these out while I wait. I just don't...

Stem - Question on Oxiclean & magic eraser

Ugh! 2-4 hours! Well, I can imagine how I could get into trouble with the dremel. I'll just have to be patient, I guess. I have three of them to do.

Stem - Question on Oxiclean & magic eraser

Yikes, this is a real PITA! How about a dremel tool? I have one. Dangerous?

Stem - Question on Oxiclean & magic eraser

Once you take it out of the Oxiclean, do you use the magic eraser dry or wet? And does the buffing off process take minutes (20-30) or hours? I am buffing dry and not making any progress. I'm not getting brown stuff on the magic eraser anymore and the stem still stinks. Can someone describe how...

Kitchen wire-bail containers with silicone rubber seals

well, went to the Goodwill today, got a nice, square glass one with a good seal for $2. Not pretty, but very functional! :D

Kitchen wire-bail containers with silicone rubber seals

Oh, I thought I mentioned that, sorry. $5 for the small one, $6 for the larger one. Too much, but it was a more upscale kind of place in a good location. They had an even larger one for $7 but the seal was getting dusty. I should go talk them down on that one and get another seal for it. I would...
