Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

What exactly, from reading my post, made you think that I tried to convince you or win you over ? Everything I posted referred to what **I**, and **I** ALONE planed to do, and haven't advised anybody, nor even suggested on what others should do. It is in my own right not to trust your word, or...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Since "jpmcwjr" said to stick with the facts ... https://www.macqueenpipes.com/pages/pipe-care-tips "Briar is designed by nature to absorb moisture and nutrients from the earth. It continues its job of absorbing moisture once it is made into a pipe."...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Here is another thought about acrylic and alcohol: From what I've gathered, a good chunk of pipe smokers are also cigar smokers, or came from a cigar background. Now having an alcoholic beverage accompany a cigar is very common, and that beverage is often bourbon, whiskey or rum. I am pretty...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

I assume you meant flushing the whole pipe. Wouldn't the briar wood swell if you submerge it in very hot water ? I think the pipe makers dry the briar for several years before cutting so it feels weird to frequently do the opposite. How long do you let the pipe dry after washing it that way ?

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

About acrylic stems and alcohol: From what I have read it seems that certain treatments, such as applying heat to make acrylic more malleable and look polished, severely impact acrylic resistance to alcohol. Most likely the shot "cup" above was treated that way. Those treated acrylics react...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

I have half a bottle of Jack Daniels that I have no intention to drink :) Thought I might just use it at something instead of pouring it out down the drain.

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Any chance that that company (and others like them) are also selling some *special* proprietary pipe cleaning products ;) ? I have an impression that people have used alcohol to clean their stems for ages.

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

I should probably start a new thread on this but since cleaning was mentioned so often, I clean my pipes after every smoke, once the pipe cooled down, with a pipe cleaner dipped into Jack Daniels (after squeezing the excess alcohol out). I clean both the inside of the stem and the bowl. Am I...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Thanks for the insights and advice woordsroad ! I'll keep that in mind. Actually I prefer the look of a nice smooth briar, this is my only rusticated/sandblasted pipe. I have just started to build my collection so I thought it was a cheaper way to add one more pipe into rotation and also "test"...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

That is very encouraging, thanks for sharing ! At this point I am sure the stem on my pipe is glued with the shank on the inside, supporting the cracks. No problem with getting a pipe cleaner through, so as you said, I'm pretty sure it'll be fine for years to come.

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to write back ! Appreciate it ! To answer a few questions: yes, I did remove the balsa filter before reinserting the stem (I used the filter it came with to soak up some of the excess glue actually). the box the pipe came in had sit for a few hours...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Well, smokingpipes response contained just a recommendation for a repair shop ... So NO replacement or exchange  Although it is my fault for not contacting them when I noticed the problem with the stem, it is disappointing that they would ship a pipe without checking the stem fitting...

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Thanks very much guys for sharing your thoughts and advice ! Its a brand new pipe I bought from smokingpipes.com. I will reach out to them but I fear they might not be interested in warranty/repair/exchange anymore since I tried to fix it myself first :(

Is it OK to Never Remove the Stem ?

Hi everyone, I'm new to pipe smoking. Have just received a brand new Savinelli Avorio rusticated and the stem was reeeaaally tight. After repeated twisting and pulling, and some elbow grease eventually managed to get the stem out for inspection and cleaning before lighting the pipe up for the...
