Making Time For Your Pipe When Traveling

Telescopes, Excellent question. If I'm traveling for business (which is most common), I try to pre-game where I'm staying by calling ahead & asking them if they have any place on property where I could smoke a pipe or a cigar. The reception I have received from the hotels in the past has been...

I Don't Smoke in Warm Weather. You?

I smoke year round, although its harder for me to smoke in the winter months because I refuse to bundle up and sit out in the freezing cold weather to smoke. That's just enjoyable for me. I'm going to solve that problem this year by my garage remodel - building new work benches, shelves and...

Care of Different Stem Materials (Vulcanite, Cumberland, Amber, Lucite/Acrylic, Bakelite)

No, because Obsidian isn't going to absorb into the stem like it will with Vulcanite. You want to use a coating just to shine it like chapstick or I've even heard of some folks using beeswax.

Care of Different Stem Materials (Vulcanite, Cumberland, Amber, Lucite/Acrylic, Bakelite)

I am also another supporter of Obsidian oil on vulcanite stems. Majority of my pipes are vulcanite, and the treatment they get inside is 190 Everclear on the pipe cleaner to get the crud out, and two needle pin dabs of Obsidian rubbed in vigorously then followed up with a buff with a cotton...

Frustrated by Escudo Navy De Luxe Rolls

Agreed with all the others. You have to give it a break. There are so many good VaPers out there that are worth trying. As much as I adore Escudo, and I do mean that I absolutely love it, the world does not revolve around that singular blend. There is nothing is wrong with Escudo, I promise...

    SPC Virginia Jazz Signature Series

Jim, what’s important is that you like it. If you’ve smoked 3 tins and you really like it, buy as much as you can get your hands on. There’s no guarantee it’ll be there tomorrow. I’m really glad you enjoy it! Cheers

    SPC Virginia Jazz Signature Series

I'm working through the tin and I'm struggling to gather my enthusiasm for this one. This has to be the mildest, mellow VaPer I've ever smoked. The tin note is amazing, exactly what I'd expect. On first light there's moments of hope where I think "oh wow this is going to be good," and then...

Father of the Flame 2019 Pipe Doc

I purchased this documentary when it first came out and it was really one of mixed emotions. Overall it was very well done and the production quality was superb. I just watched it again last night and I was still left wondering what story and/or what presentation of pipe smoking was the producer...

    Coolidor for my pipe tobacco

That’s great news. I’ve always vacuum sealed my mason jars and have never had any issue at all. I guess this boils down to the old if it works, don’t fix it truism. Thanks!

    Best Retrohale

It depends on what you enjoy. I find English and Orientals have the most pleasant soft retro exhales, whereas the VaPers give you a slap across the face, especially if it’s a good aged one with a healthy dose of Perique. You’ll know you’re alive if you retro a big puff of aged Escudo or Deluxe...

    Coolidor for my pipe tobacco

Which rH % do you use for cellaring? I have been wanting to buy these for a while to drop in my mason jars. I was thinking 58%?

Relights - Maybe it’s just me

Sounds right to me. I’m an ash dumper too. If it’s breaking some cardinal rule of pipe smoking, ask me if I care.

Relights - Maybe it’s just me

The only time I taste ash is when I don’t realize that the tobacco is gone and I keep trying to relight dottle. I suspect that more frequent tamping will reduce your relights. Most newer smokers do not tamp nearly enough. Try to lightly tamp as you go along, and if the tobacco is at the right...

    First English Blend

Welcome to a whole new world. While I’m not at all trying to poo all over aromatics, because there certainly are some worthwhile ones, venturing into the English and VaPer worlds was a total game changer for me. Sounds like it was the same for you. Before we know it, you’ll be on here telling...

#400 Superior Navy Flake by Newminster

The Stokkebye Luxury line is probably one of the best bulk options going for Virginia and VaPer lovers. I wouldn't say they are extraordinary tobaccos but definitely excellent everyday blends that "punch above their weight" for a bulk blend. Out of the bag, they're young and can have a few sharp...

    Zippo Pipe Inserts

Same experience here. They told me they have discontinued the freebie. Given where we are economically speaking, it doesn’t surprise me that they just offer them for sale now. Although I can’t imagine those inserts cost more than a few cents to make.

    Cornell & Diehl Mad Fiddler

Good question. No, there is nothing artificial tasting about this blend. I never have the feeling of "it sure would be nice if _________ was not in this blend" when smoking MFF. But that is just me. That said, go over to tobacco reviews and check out the ratings to get broader feedback on this...

    Cornell & Diehl Mad Fiddler

I'm by no means a professional reviewer anywhere remotely close to the pedigree and accomplishment of JimInks, but here's my two cents worth on why I love this blend: There are those occasions when you can just tell that a tobacco offering has been expertly blended by people who know what...

    IPSD PTSD?

Yeah it goes quickly. But fortunately, it’s been dropping fairly regularly lately. I pick up a few tins each time it drops but I don’t max out my cart with Escudo anymore.
