Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

I always thought there are too many sutliff varieties. Rationalizing their catalog might make sense.

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

Watch City Cigar Nor’easter in a stanwell. Few years of age on it.ked the jar. Sublime on a cold fall day.

    Plastic for Storing Tobacco?

As someone mentioned above, I have some cigars that have sat in cheap tupperware with a bovida pack for years and are perfectly ok. I think humidity stability is more important that an airtight seal.

    Are Windcaps Over?

Those windcaps look very cool. I don't think I have ever seen one in person.

What Blends to Bring Home from USA?

If you like aromatics Boswells' are great.

    Hello From California

Howdy from NJ. Spent a lot of time in LA. I miss it.

Pack Like Drinking Through a Straw?

Just think of an upside down bonfire. The pack should be relatively lose on the bottom of the bowl and firm on top. There are different ways to accomplish that. I use an informal "Frank method" which has become basically stuff and puff over time. 1. - gravity fill, tap the sides of the bowl...

    Rossi 6mm Filter Fitment

Isn't rossi pretty much the same as Savinelli, just slightly lower end version (supposedly)? If so, I use 6mm charcoal savinelli filters in my savinelli pipes and they fit perfectly. Not that pricey - worth a try for the Rossi.

    Smoking a Pipe with GERD/Reflux

I use a big foam wedge when I sleep. Really helped with GERD. Black coffee can set me of as can alcohol. Smoking can contribute but I haven't noticed it.

Good and Bad Experiences Smoking in Public

I think I've seen two people smoking a pipe on the street in NYC in the last 5+ years. I smoke at home on the deck or porch. I have gotten a few sly comments from friends (something like "a pipe, who smokes a pipe?").

How Many Open Tins is Too Many?

Pipe tobacco is pretty inexpensive (in the US). A $15 dollar tin will last many weeks or months if you are smoking 2--3 bowls on weekends. I say have fun with it, open as many tins as you like, but make sure to properly jar and store what you have so they last.

    COPD and other Lung Issues

I don't have chronic lung issues, but I (and my wife) definitely notice some coughing and sleep apnea when I smoke pipes and cigars frequently (more than once or twice a week). Even without inhaling, smoke gets into your lungs. There is no way I would touch tobacco if I had COPD or chronic...

Blends To Start Your Friends On

Maybe a Boswell aro. They aren't overly chemically, don't burn out easily, are forgiving of heavy puffing and generally smell and taste as advertised.

How Biased Are Pipe Tobacco Reviews

It's not the bias so much as the specificity and detail that throws me off. Perhaps some people have super palates and mine is useless, but I can't relate. I prefer more general impressions and simple reviews rather than a detailed analysis and breakdown of tobacco type in the blend. But to...

    Pipe Smoking and Cancer

It's a risk. Period. How much? Who really knows. Reasonable to assume that it is less than smoking cigarettes and that frequency of smoking is relevant. Given all the environmental risk factors we already encounter, my personal view is that an occasional pipe (eg 1-2x per week) is a minimal...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2024?***

Sunbear Mountain Flower (2022) in a Savinelli 626 with a 9mm filter. Turning out to be one of those sublime morniny smokes.

Smoking to the Bottom of the Bowl.

I stopped worrying about it. With deeper bowl pipes I find it much more difficult to smoke down to a fine ash. The type of tobacco and moisture content also matters a lot.

    Tobacco Quality

Supposedly their is a significant difference between Cyprian and Syrian Latakia, which has not been available in a long time. But with respect to currently available tobacco probably not a major difference.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

HU Director’s Cut (with 4 years of age) in a Big Ben 9mm filter pipe (unfinished but developing a nice patina).

    Filter or Non-filter Pipes? Confused.

Savinelli 6mm pipes are quite versatile. You can smoke them with no filter (using the plastic adapter prevents the draw from being too open), a balsa filter, or a 6mm charcoal filter (which I happen to like the best).
