    Broken Pipe: Mark Ryan

What a gut punch. Rest in Peace, Mark. You were a true pioneer, visionary, and maverick in the world of tobacco. Damn.

Forum Notice: Two Changes in Moderation on Your Postings

I think the sentiments shared by @Sig and @anthonyrosenthal74 are beautiful. Without us answering those questions we’ve heard 1000x from beginners and making them feel as welcome as possible, the forum will eventually die.

Forum Notice: Two Changes in Moderation on Your Postings

@woodsroad @georged You don't have to do anything fancy for a relevant thread to come up from a Google search. Whenever I have a question about anything pipe related I just add 'pipesmagazine' at the end of the inquiry. For example, here is something that I would put into Google: 'deep cleaning...

    What are You Reading Now?

Just finished Call of the Wild by Jack London. I actually think I prefer White Fang but it was still a great book. The two books are so similar in some ways and polar opposites in other ways.

    Smoking as a Conservative Act

You could argue that the ‘breakneck pace’ of the modern world began after the Industrial Revolution. It doesn’t get much more breakneck than working 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week in a factory. Pipe smoking was still extremely popular during that time. I think that the single biggest...

How Long to Smoke a Bowl?

Pretty much all of my pipes last between 40-50 mins.

It’s my turn to have this flu that our daughter brought home. It fortunately seems to just be a bad cold for me and my wife as opposed to the multiple days of a fever that our daughter had. No pipes for me but I’m enjoying the posts, fellas. 👍

$25 Cased French Briar Ropp Golden Burl

Yep. I just traded in a few Ropps for store credit because of the wind-tunnel-esque draws. It’s because the stummels were originally drilled for stingers, as you said. The stems are also very cheap vulcanite and oxidize if you so much as breathe in their direction. The frustrating thing with...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2025?***

The last pipe I bought, a genuine Bertram for $16.95 shipped, was made with the finest Algerian briar ever harvested by man. When Bertram Goldman started up Bertram pipes in Washington D.C., he sold Algerian briar pipes fashioned out of 200-year-old burls with so much sap, they would make a pine...

    No, it’s an unfiltered pipe.

Thanks, Paul. The jury is still out on that pipe. It smokes dry but I still haven’t found THAT blend for THAT pipe if you know what I mean. The draw is a touch more open than on my Savinelli Tre pipes in my estimation. I’m very particular about how my pipes draw.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2025?***

C&D Burley flake #1 in a brand new Algerian briar that only cost me $24.95 shipped. The first thing I did when I got this in the mail was remove the varnish with steel wool and alcohol and then I added olive oil to give it a nice shine. The sap gives it a peppery spice and there is no better...

That Radice is so easy on the eyes. Wonderful pipe.

If a pipe had a soul, this is how it would wanna go. It totally beats being sat in a drawer for decades.

Kendal mixed in a trusty Savinelli 104 Tre rusticated. Cowboy on the prowl and in the hunt. Cowboy actually brought a live vole into my house the other day. Haha. The damn thing was running all over my living room before I finally killed it with a sandal.

I’m terribly sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

    Your Most Challenging Blend

Marlin Flake for me. To use @sablebrush52 ’s wording, it has a very narrow moisture range where you get the most out of the blend.
