    General Beginner Tips

    1. I'm a fairly new smoker (one year). I store my tobacco in mason jars (canning jars) as they are good at moisture retention. They are inexpensive to buy as well. For a 50g (1.75 oz) tin of tobacco, a 250ml jar is perfect. Right now I have 8 blends ready to go. 2. As a result of the...

    The Miracle of Briar

Good point, Sgetz. I hadn't considered this. Thanks.

    The Miracle of Briar

If tobacco's combustion point is 500 C. but while burning it remains about 600ish as you mention, and if briar's combustion point is 700 C. but its burn temperature is, say, 800ish, then the points I was trying to make remain true. 1. There's a lot of "headroom" for us as we smoke and we...

    The Miracle of Briar

mparker762, I didn't look much into it. I simply googled "tobacco burning temperature" and "briar burning temperature" and a few entries came up. I simply wanted a rough estimate. As you suggest, there will be more to it if ignition temperature vs. burn temperature are considered.

    The Miracle of Briar

Hello Gentlemen. As a fairly new pipe smoker, I have much to learn, and it's all enjoyable. Today I'm sitting in the sun smoking Amphora Virginia in my Savinelli 316 and marvelling at the wonder of the pipe. Essentially I'm smoking a plant (tobacco) in an instrument which is also a plant (the...

    Hello from Almaty

Too much traffic? More air pollution? Crime? Is that what you're referring to?

    Hello from Almaty

Thanks for replying Talgat. Looks like an interesting selection of pipes in the shop. I see a couple I'd be interested in. i'm happy to hear you've found online sources too. When I read you have 5-6 shops in your city, I thought that seemed a good number, but then I looked up Almaty's...

Pipe Smokers Who have Settled on a Few Standbys

Thanks edger. I've tried Amphora Virginia and Amphora Black Cavendish and enjoy both. I'm just awaiting delivery of tins of MacBaren's HH Pure Virginia, MacBaren's Vanilla Flake, and Astley's No. 55 Elizabethan. It'll be my first time trying those. I'll make note of the C&D blends for next...

Pipe Smokers Who have Settled on a Few Standbys

Thanks edger. I like your perspective on this. I've only been pipe smoking for a year but due to my Old Guy status i don't have time to experiment with blends for years. Furthermore, tobacco prices are high where I live. i want to find maybe 3-4 affordable blends that suit me and stick with...

    College Smoking

Welcome frogdonovan. If that's your actual name, is it Frog Donovan or Donovan Frog? If the latter, shall we call you Don Frog? I'm a fairly new pipesmoker. Your proposed ethnographic study sounds interesting and worthwhile; however, i don't know whether I'll be of any use to you, having...

    Hello from Almaty

Welcome from BC, Canada. Talgat, what pipes and tobaccos are available to you in Kazakhstan? Do you have tobacco shops near your home? Are there pipe makers nearby who you can purchase from in-person or do you have to order online? Is pipe smoking popular in your country? You must have some...

RIP: Prince Philip, Duke Of Edinburgh.

He was a good man and a strong man. Not many like him in public life these days, I don't think. He combined confidence with humility, seriousness with humour, gentleness with toughness, decisiveness with patience, action with self-control. I've always thought of Philip as a man of great...

    Recommended First Non-Aromatic

I'm a recent pipe smoker and a Canuck as well. When I began I was truly confused about tobaccos. I had no idea what Virginia tasted like, as opposed to Burley or whatever, not to mention how to choose between the hundreds of blends. Expense was an issue too, what with the high cost of tobacco...

    Social or Anti-Social Pipe Smoker?

Smoking a pipe immediately puts me in a thoughtful, meditative space. I might read a good book or interesting article or I might just sit there with an empty mind. However, it would feel antisocial and selfish to spend an enjoyable hour of smoking all by myself, so I never do. I absolutely...
