    Struggling to taste tabacco

Haha! Seriously though, in a more relaxed state, some pipe tobaccos do exhibit to me aspects of other flavors…. I have found some that have a hint of cinnamon or of vanilla or of juniper or of whisky to name a few of the more common flavors (of many) I have found in different blends.

    Low Nicotine pipe tobacco

Your plan seems logical. I do suspect, that with care, you will have success. Having been away from pipes for that length of time IMO requires a learning curve to be experienced again. The analogy about bike riding being “never forgotten” is not as true as many would think. I remember...

    Struggling to taste tabacco

To me, the word here is “SUBTLE”. To taste all the myriad of “flavors and textures” that are potentially available in a pipe tobacco, I believe you need to be mentally “available” to perceive them. To be mentally available (at least for me) one needs to be calm, contemplative, and not harried...

    Low Nicotine pipe tobacco

Hmm. To me the only realistic approach to take would be a) pick a particular pipe tobacco you currently have and like in terms of flavor, etc., then b) try smoking a smaller amount (via size of bowl perhaps or by length of time… perhaps 1/8th the length of time you had tried when you would...

    Pipe Cleaning and Maintenance

I guess I am not particularly fastidious about it. I smoke my pipes without any thought other than knocking out the ashes between bowls…. until I find the experience not to my liking. Then I will either use a pipe cleaner to clean the stem and shank or ream the bowl a bit to wrangle the pipe...

    New Arrangement, New Ventilation.

Man, I also like the cuckoo clock you have! My wife and I HAD what appears to be the same kind (it was my parent’s originally)….. until….. our cat took to being interested in playing with the pine cone weights and knocked it onto the floor, smashing it to smithereens. 😞

    New Arrangement, New Ventilation.

Looks like a nice ventilation setup. But that pipe rack….. REALLY nice!!! What a neat design….. it has a sort of “Modern Mid-century” sort of appearance, which I like a lot. Did you make it yourself?

How Do You Pick Your Next Smoke?

For me (codger mode) I pick whatever codger tub I have open until it is gone…. Prince Albert or Sir Walter Raleigh. When I sporadically feel “adventuresome” every once in a great while, I will do what some here have dubbed the “parfait” thing…. 3/4 bowl of the codger tub, topped by a blend of...

    Contemplative Silliness?

Interesting. I have not had a lot of success breathing smoking a cigar thus far.

    Contemplative Silliness?

I too smoke my cigars much more slowly than anyone in the cigar group I have been getting involved with. Like with you, it is probably from the cadence habits I have from pipe smoking.

    Contemplative Silliness?

I regularly smoked pipes for decades, and rarely smoked cigars at all. But, in the last maybe two years, I have been smoking perhaps a cigar a week. I never thought much about the difference in how I was smoking a cigar…. basically just doing what felt “natural” to me. I guess I thought...

    Contemplative Silliness?

Last Thursday, I went to a cigar group I have been going to occasionally. I had a Brickhouse Maduro. While I was there, after the others had left, I had perhaps another 30 minutes left for my cigar and I began to contemplate about the variances between a cigar and a pipe. I ignored the obvious...

Finally installed Raching MON5800 Cigar Humidor Cabinet

    Wow! Beautiful and impressive!

    Jorge Cigars - Question

I accidentally posted this in the “What are you smoking (cigar)” section…. but I see that is not really the correct place (asking to have it removed). So I started a separate thread….. I have been trying out new (for me) Jorge cigars and they are quite pleasant….. the latest has been a 70x6...

    Smoking Entire Bowl

Maybe just fill the bowl half full, then you would smoke it all. 😉 Seriously, for me, if the bottom half stops and a relight does not work…. It is knocked out into the ashtray. I suspect after some time, your technique will evolve and it will happen less and less frequently.

    Pipe Relights...Don't Worry About It!

The ONLY time I WORRY about relights….. is when my lighter is pretty darn close to being out of fuel….. and I do not have another flame source handy. Other than that….. relight when necessary for enjoyment.

    Taking out the trash..

In my opinion, either letting the spent ash stay or dumping CAN be done. I do not dump ash from my bowl while smoking, but only after I have finished the pipe…. to me it is easier and simpler. But either way works. As far as a “crusty shelf” you mention…. That IMO is likely a ridge of...

    Unique Pipes

All of the prior examples are definitely beautiful (or at least “interesting” 🙂) pipes….. But, philosophically, I think that EVERY pipe is unique in its own way. Even every machined Dr. Grabow Duke for instance…. Each one is nuanced in its own unique way. 😉 So, I thought about posting a...

Exhaust Fan For New Smoking Room?

I guess after all this rigamarole….. I would just opt for outside…. less hassle. And you can still listen to music or get drunk if the mood strikes. :)

    Leather Pouch Storage

This is the type I used to have, and I found it to be very durable, worked well, and was pleasantly large enough to hold 3-4 ounces if packed firmly. It is the common design that was widely available in the 70s and 80s. I think the ones I had purchased were sold by Dr. Grabow and were...
