    Moving to the EU

I know Coimbra. It's quite a varied area--anything between a medieval student dormitory or a nearby vineyard ranch. But lovely, central, and full of expats.

    Moving to the EU

I would check Portuguese law, but also firsthand accounts of other expatriates relocating to Portugal and possibly Spain. They're out there (and on pipe forums), you're not the first. My reason for stating this is that there is occasionally a difference between the law in print, and how it...

    2025 Chicago Pipe Show!

It was great to see you too! It's hard when you're "working" the show, and even when you're not, as there's a constant ebb and flow of faces all day long. Having said that, nothing that can't be remedied! PM me your address!

    More about Latakia...

My point wasn't that, rather the last two sentences.

    Getting Tobacco from Europe

Funny how Birthday and Balkan look the same at 6:00am!! Sorry 'bout that! :ROFLMAO:

    Getting Tobacco from Europe

This wonderful blend still gets imported along with other Dan/DTM tobaccos. For starters... https://www.marscigars.com/cao-billbaileysbalkanblend.aspx

    More about Latakia...

I really enjoyed rotate 's comments above. Every tin of British and Continental tobacco I've opened from perhaps the 50s onward has had Latakia that was dusty-grey to ruby-dark, lightly smokey threads, on what was apparently an Oriental leaf base (Syrian being Ruby and vinous). Some time...

Increasing Cloudiness on Half of Amber Stem

But! On a positive note, yes you can buff amber to a shine with fine grit sandpaper discs, if the crazing hasn't pitted it too deeply. And it smells good.

Increasing Cloudiness on Half of Amber Stem

Put another way, amber is an amalgam of organic resins that are soluble in organic solvents to various extents. Here is an analysis performed by various German scientists one hundred years ago, putting the solubility of the relevant amber types at up to approximately 20%. These guys took notes...

Increasing Cloudiness on Half of Amber Stem

I don't touch amber with organic solvents to save my life. Soapy water is all I use. The first and only time I used solvent on an amber stem, I watched it crumble into dust in a matter of hours.

    New Dunhill Smokingpipes Collab

Like an ex girlfriend coming around again after ... a hundred years. "Things were good then, weren't they? Where did we ever go wrong? ... do you still have feelings for me?"

    Sad News From Italy

I am too! Those photos are famous by now though I haven't seen em. I really ought to do one on Ben Wade for 2026.

    Sad News From Italy

Having focused almost exclusively on British pipes my entire collecting life, I know quite literally nothing about Castello. I have heard that there will be a presentation at this year's Chicago Pipe Show where a well-known and photographically skilled member of our community will present...

    Aging Dry Tobacco?

From a scientific standpoint, the entropic molecular transformations that occur with aging are radically altered both in type and speed with humidity as a variable. A good experiment might be to divide up the jars and try different humidities. I have two jars of McClelland bulk Virginia 2000...

    Pope Francis, 88, has died

My tobacco shop was on Esmeralda. It was Bellagio back then and became Davidoff and now is Bellagio again I think. I was there before he renovated the basement and put in cigar lockers, and people like Grondona started showing up. And then La Casa del Habano, the proprietor at that time being...
