Watch This Dunhill Sell Right Now

I'm partial to Dunhill DR Billiards, despite the price. But that's a really weak example. I don't see how they dared grade it so highly with those sand pits in the first place. And the grain isn't any better than I've seen on B's or C's. *And* it's dinged up, and recent vintage. What a waste of...

    Getting into Burleys

It's a VA/Bur and not a pure Burley, but I'd definitely recommend Solani's Silver Flake (660). I even prefer it to the Aged Burley Flake. It's been a while since I've tried them and I certainly haven't tested every one, but the C&D Burleys don't really do it for me. There's a characteristic...

    Flake Tobacco: Preparing and Drying

It depends on the particular flake. For what I'd call "well-behaved" flakes (not super dense or moist) like OGS, any Solani, Capstan, Stokkebye LNF, etc. I dry the flakes whole just slightly. Then I fill the pipe with a combination of mush/fold-and-stuff at the bottom and more rubbed out tobacco...

Looking For a New Pipe-Need Help- Peterson Spigot?

I'll second the recommendation for Ferndown - they're going to be a notch more expensive than Peterson spigots, but I think the silver work is finer. But Les simply doesn't produce nearly the quantity of pipes that Peterson does, so you may have to be patient to find just the one for you.

Burley Blends for Breaking in New Pipe

Just smoke whatever you want to smoke. Buying a blend just for the sake of breaking in a pipe? Way too much fuss, and any benefit (if it exists at all, which I doubt) will be tiny. I wouldn't smoke a Lat blend or a heavy aro in a pipe I wanted to primarily smoke natural VA's or Bur's, but even...

What Would You Do - Norwoods Pipe Repair

I'm with mustanggt. The off-center dot is total slop IMO. But why throw good money after bad? Send it to Walker or someone else who can do it right and save yourself the annoyance.

    Microwaving Tobacco

Back when PC monitors were big boxy things that used to take up your whole desk, I'd dry tobacco on a sheet of paper placed on top of the monitor. That was nice... took maybe 10 minutes, fast enough to be convenient but slow enough to have plenty of control. I won't be going back to those old...

My Son Wants to Grind his Dwarf

I suggest you print up this thread, put it in an envelope in your desk, and hold onto it until you can present it to your son on his son's/daughter's 13th birthday. It will take until then for him to truly appreciate it.

    Blizzard is coming

At the risk of forfeiting my curmudgeon card, I'd rather see bold warnings that turn out to be unnecessary than the alternative. We had one of our biggest blizzards in history a few years ago in Chicago. The authorities were pretty clear that it was coming, it was going to be bad, and that you...

i want an evil looking churchwarden.

Talbert for sure, like others said. But as noted, no commissions and the Goblins/Halloween pipes go fast. Actually, all of his pipes go fast, but especially those lines.

Ferndown / Les Wood Experts: Opinions Please on this Ebay Pipe

I have little doubt that the linked pipe is an authentic Ferndown. It looks exactly like I'd expect a Ferndown to look, I've never heard of them being counterfeited before, and I wouldn't expect someone to bother making such a high-quality fake of a pipe at that price level. I think a lot of...

    McC 5100 Red Cake

It's been some time since I've smoked 5100, but I recall it being very different than Christmas Cheer 2014. The CC was red, sure, but it was very dry (i.e. not sweet) compared to the typical McC red VA.

    Va/Per Suggestions

I smoke PS LNF to the tune of a few pounds per year, but it's not what I'd call a proper VAPer. The Perique just adds a bit of depth there without being central to the flavor. Of the blends mentioned already, I'd recommend Escudo, McC's St. James Woods, and SG's St. James Flake as more...

Best New Briar Pipe for under $200?

I like Ligne Bretagne - I bought that little bulldog that popped up a week or two back. But LB's are usually fairly small bowls (mine especially so), and the OP said he wanted bigger bowls. For larger pipes, I think the "sub-$200" price range is awkward. You're not going to find many...

    VA/Perique Remarks

I like LBF, but the sweet centers of the coins make it a very unique blend (apart from Davidoff's Flake Medallions, which I've not tried myself). If you like LBF, don't go into other VAPer's expecting anything similar.

    VA/Perique Remarks

I smoked a tin of St. James Woods recently. I found it changed more through the bowl than any other VAPer I remember. For the first half of the bowl, I could barely taste any Perique at all - it was just like smoking any other red McC VA. The Perique didn't come in until the second half of the...

I'll Have a Hennessy V.S Sidecar, Up with a Twist, Please

I was on a vintage cocktail kick for a while in college (in the 90's) and used to mix Sidecars for my girlfriend (now my wife). She was disappointed when bartenders had no idea what they were. Good drink!

    Good Cavendish Mixtures?

I really like this one myself, but I'm not sure that's what the OP's friend would be expecting. "Cavendish" only refers to the process of curing and flavoring, not to the underlying leaf, and I'd expect a typical pipe smoker to associate Cavendish with the light, mild, Black Cavendish variety...

    Stop, Collaborate and Listen

Thanks sparks, those were the ones I was thinking of.

My One Issue with Ebay is...

What happens if you look up the tracking number? Do you see the package in transit? If the seller generates a label and then just sits on the package for a week when they said 2-3 days, then yeah... that's just bad selling. I wouldn't feel justified leaving negative feedback just for that...
