    A Match or a Lighter?

I think there is something more elegant about using a match, compared to a crap lighter, matches are just a pain in the arse when you’re outdoors; I mowed the lawn today, I must’ve used 6-8 matches to get the pipe puffing.

We used to have “sh*t wi’ sugar on” which could range from bread and sugar, left over pastry from that night’s pie, covered in sugar and then cooked in the oven to pancakes or Yorkshire puddings sprinkled with sugar. The last ones, by far, were the best.

When we were little and playing tiggy lamppost, or something similar in the school playground, we used to have to count, loudly, so that everyone could get into their position before the game could begin. Usually the count was to 20. At the end break time or lunch time, when competitiveness...

    Remember When?

Certainly different times. Ah, I miss those kind of things that were taken for granted, like parking babies in prams outside the shop while mother went in to get some shopping - can you imagine that happening these days? There’d be uproar! Regularly we used to get parked outside the Railway Arms...

I guess that the war generation got so used to deprivation that they continued with those behaviours long after the necessity had passed. Gran insisted on stocking the pantry with cans of stew and dried eggs, as if the bombs would start falling again any second.

You should have seen Mrs Watkins bolt outside to get the tea bags in if there was even the slightest hint that it might rain! ? To say that she was ‘frugal’ would be a massive understatement. They don’t make them like her anymore, that is for sure.

When I was little we used to live next door to an old lady - museum vintage antiquity kind of old - and she used to hang used tea bags on her washing line so she could reuse them! The tea must’ve been so weak it could barely have crawled up the spout of the tea pot to get in the cup.

    "Premium Pipe Tobacco"

Here’s my two pennyworth - there was a time when tobacco houses would have manufactured a range of tobacco products. Here in the UK, as a couple of examples, Benson and Hedges used to make cigarettes (B&H Gold and Silver), cigars (machine made Hamlets) and pipe tobacco (B&H’s Mellow Virginia...

I’ll See Your St Bruno and Raise You

Here’s the old Erinmore tin I use to keep their flake in. The seal has worn away but it works well for me when I need to take baccy out and about. Also, the 6mm filter Falcon Coolway 12 is getting more enjoyable with every smoke; I wasn’t that keen on it to start with, I thought it was too...

I’ve had the same problem “couldn’t contact the server” but it seems to be working now.

I’ll See Your St Bruno and Raise You

Agreed, both are lovely but Erinmore has lost some of that…Erinmore thing since STG took the production on. Having said that, the Erinmore flavour only really came through with the first 3-6 puffs and then it was lost in a smoke of delight that lasts a good while. I’m going to sup up and have...

    Estate Pipe Rabbit Hole

I always find a ‘gambling’ element kicks in when I go in for an EBay auction and reason seems to go out of the window. I’ve done my due diligence; checked how much a given pipe is from new, checked the condition (as much as I can from descriptions and photos), set myself a cut off price that I...

I’ll See Your St Bruno and Raise You

True. I’m in the SB camp more than the Erinmore camp these days but I still like a flake or two of Erinmore.

I’ll See Your St Bruno and Raise You

Never tried Erinmore plug - I wasn’t even aware that it was a thing until recently, long after Murray’s ceased to be - hopefully it will be as nice as the old flake used to be. The new Erinmore doesn’t have the same Erinmoreness that the old stuff used to have, I don’t think, but it’s still...

What are You Drinking? July 2022

Bovril with a crack of black pepper.

I’ll See Your St Bruno and Raise You

I’ll take either Erinmore or St Bruno - preferably both from the last century - but seeing as though I haven’t got any of that, the modern stuff will just have to do.

    A Match or a Lighter?

To be honest Embers, it was only a couple of £’s so I don’t expect it to last longer than five minutes. ?

    A Match or a Lighter?

Speaking with a neighbour about matches or lighters and he pointed out that there is a perpetual match, which I had never heard of. so I just ordered one…fill it with Zippo fuel for a windproof match. Could this be the answer to the conundrum of match vs wind?

    A Match or a Lighter?

I think one of the main reasons I like matches is that I have been known to misplace things; over the years I have spent good money on buying nice lighters (an engraved, Battle of Britain memorial, Zippo springs to mind) and try to look refined only to lose things with an alarming immediacy. I...
