  1. Butter Side Down

This is a request from Latakiaphiles...

I've had about half of them. Haven't really had a bad one so far but these are the three that made it into the permanent rotation: Kensington - kind of a sleeper hit for me. Lighter on the Latakia than most of his, but it's still unmistakably present. Great for early in the day. Meridian - I'd...

First Visit to Iwan Ries - Anything I Should Know?

I'm in Chicago, so it's been my good fortune to have it as my local B&M for the last 20 years. I'm not actually sure how many times I've been there, but it's a lot. Some general tips: - If you treat them well, they'll treat you well. - If you want recommendations, definitely talk to them about...

    Pipe Sighting at the Movies

I noticed that too and it also bummed me out. The cynic in me thought: Invent something that kills thousands of people in one go? 😎👍 Smoke a pipe? 😡👎

Don’t Care For Latakia, But I Did Like FM OTT - What To Try?

Despite you saying in the thread title that you don't like latakia, I think a lot of the Frog Mortons actually had quite a bit of latakia, but very little orientals. Which would be the reverse of something like Early Morning or Presbyterian or Red Rapparee. Which is to say I guess, you may or...

    Difficulty keeping Gaslight Lit

Same here. I just figured relighting every few minutes was an unwanted but necessary price to pay for the rest of the sublime experience. Also I have an unsubstantiated belief that Latakia blends lose something special if they get too dry so I tend to be over cautious when drying them.

    Dishonorable Mentions

I'm sort of close to this but it's rare for my feelings to rise to active dislike. This could be a matter of semantics though. To me there's a difference between "didn't like" (which is passive, like... Meh, not for me) and "disliked" (which is active, like... Yuck! Ptooie! Pass me the...

***What Are You Smoking, August 2023?***

Somehow an hour just pleasantly evaporated.

***What Are You Smoking, August 2023?***

It's a DIY kind of day. The tobacco: "The False Commodore" - 50% Stirling Flake / 50% blending Latakia. An attempt to approximate Sillem's Commodore Flake (and use up the Stirling flake). Turned out pretty nice! The pipe: "The Heartbreaker." So named because the giant void in the briar didn't...

    ¿For Any Burqueños/Albuquerqueans?

Kind of a long shot here, I know, but.... I'm going to visit some old friends in Albuquerque next month. It's been a long time since I've been back. I'd like to stop by any local pipe shops while I'm there if any still exist. The one I remember from way back is pueblo pipe shop, but either...

    Ribbon cut VA recs

Thanks for the suggestions all. If anybody has more, keep them coming. Wasn't able to find any of these at my trip to Iwan Ries over the weekend, but I did pick up another tin of Rattray 40 VA, a tin of Capstan RR Blue, and a GL Pease I'd never seen before called Penny Farthing (not strictly a...

    Ribbon cut VA recs

I think I might actually have a tin of Elizabethan lingering at the bottom of a pile of solo tins I've collected over the years under the loose heading "to try at some point later on." I should dig that out.

    Ribbon cut VA recs

As far as VAs go, I've always been a flake smoker but I picked up a tin of Rattray 40 Virginia (a ribbon cut) a few months back and I have to say I'm really loving the no fuss, no muss simple pleasure of just scooping my pipe in the jar, giving the top a press and lighting it up all codger...

    Your "No Fuss/Go To" Tobacco?

For latakia, it'd be Skiff mixture. For VA, Rattray's 40 Virginia.

    Latakia Blend Tasting Test

Yeah. That's pretty different all right! Also the color is much lighter in the current version. Of course that could be because VAs tend to darken as they age. Hopefully if still tastes the same! In another thread talking about blenders changing things (which I can't find now), somebody said...

    Tobacco Rotation.

I'm a little late to the thread, but I was wondering the same thing and found the thread with the search. In comparison to most of y'all, I fall pretty far onto the side of hot mess. I just counted and was shocked to find out I have 23 things open right now. Which is too many considering that...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2023?***

I think pretty soon these two will be considered common law married in most states.

    Asteroid City -The movie

If you were looking for one *like* it, you'd probably have good luck searching generally for a full-bent or 3/4 bent billiard. As for the exact pipe or manufacturer... I couldn't say. When I saw the movie, I thought it might be a Peterson, but the mouthpiece is not quite the same. The lighter...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2023?***

Dark Flake Unscented in an unbranded "yard pipe." This tobacco perfectly demonstrates the game Two Truths and a Lie in just three simple words. I'll leave you to guess which one is the lie...

    Latakia Blend Tasting Test

Definitive answers on this will need to come from someone with longer history with the blend but my conjectures based on my experience are below. Cut: I'm still working though the pound of Squadron Leader I bought in 2014. (I put down the pipe for nearly seven years... so it doesn't show as...
