One Tobacco To Rule Them All

For me it would be Capstan Blue, assuming you didn't care about price If you want to save some and still have a great Virginia flake (though not quite as fine as Capstan), Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake. Great tobacco, and you can buy it by the pound box.

    How About Not Designating Pipes?

I keep my pipes dedicated to specific genres, rarely to specific blends. I do have tobaccos that I only smoke in a specific pipe. I have one Castello that is the only pipe I smoke McConnell Scottish Flake in, but I smoke other flakes in it was well. The only one tobacco, one pipe dedication I...

    Post Covid Taste

I got it in September and still taste and smell haven't returned to normal. At first I couldn't even taste a spoonful of minced garlic, that's changed but subtle flavors are off. I've only smoked once or twice, and picked up on some tastes, but not all, and smell is really off. I can't get the...

    B&M Etiquette

I figure at least a tin. Most people come in and buy a tin or a cigar or two and leave, as long as you're doing that you're cool. If you hang out, they know there's a better chance you may buy another tin, or you finally decide you really can't live without that new pipe in the case. I know I've...

    Northern Briars, Quality?

I have one, a good smoker. At the price they usually command, I would deal with it.

    Which Brandy or Cognac?

I'm a fan of Cardenal Mendoza and Gran Duque d'Alba. I like the sherries I have tried, but I've not really dived deep. I enjoyed Lustau's East India Reserve and Tio Pepe? (very dry). Really I've given the brandies and sherries short shrift, when I'm drinking something from that area it's Port 99...

    Typical Pipe Smoking Attire

Pants for sure. Not so much for others, but embers on members is not comfy.

A Pipe Smoker's Movie: The Quiet Man.

It was damned curious walking down a country road and seeing dwarf palm trees there. Dublin seems like everyone is from somewhere else, and the only way you can tell you're in Ireland is everyone is smashed on Guinness. I prefer Clare, Cork and Kerry......and Beamish over Guinness.

    Missed Out On Syrian Latakia

Different base tobacco and different woods. I liked Syrian a little better, it has a winey quality as mentioned above. The curing process didn't seem to overwhelm the underlying taste of the Oriental base leaf. All in all more subtle than Cyprian. However, Syrian today will be more subtle than...

What is the Difference Between an Oriental and a Balkan?

Generally when something says Balkan it is going to emulate one of two blends, both will be heavier on Oriental and Latakia. The Latakia forward ones are trying to emulate Balkan Sobranie 759 in some way or another. Those that are Oriental forward are in the family of Balkan Sobranie or Sobranie...

How do you Choose What to Smoke?

Most of the time I have a taste for something specific and go from there. Some days....a lot of days, I want dark, deep Virginias. Or I may have a taste for some Oriental incense. On deep winter days, I seem to like something like Bengal Slices. Its the same as what Scotch I want, it's not a...
