Up with What are You Lighting ?

I got a Zippo butane pipe lighter insert recently, pretty disappointed with it so far tbh. It only takes a tiny amount of fuel when I fill it, and doesn't have enough pressure to keep the flame going in the slightest breeze. Basically unusable outdoors. So it's back to the old Bic for me. I...

    Lightheaded and Not Sure Why

As far as still feeling lightheaded the next day: if you were still smelling the smoke, the smell alone can trigger the lightheaded/queasy feeling. The last time I overdid it on nicotine, I didn't want to smell, taste, or think about pipes or tobacco for a couple days. If you have facial hair...

Missouri Meerschaum Bit Mix and Match

Thanks! I wouldn't call it flush, there is a slight gap on either side of the shank, but hardly big enough for tobacco bits to get into. Looks pretty centered. My 12 year old Country Gentleman might have less of a gap, but it's hard to tell because it's mostly filled in with tar and detritus.

    AJL67 Blew Up My Mailbox

Last known photo of the culprit, watch out if you see this man. The veritable tobacco bomb arrived yesterday, exuding powerful aromas that reminded me of tea with citrus. All jokes aside, AJL67 generously offered to send me a few samples of some Virginia blends. I was expecting an ounce or...

    First Smoke with a Stinger

Interesting, that does make sense. I'll have to try it without the stinger and see if it's still wet. I have a similarly sized corncob that I didn't notice smoking all that wet, but it has more wood for the smoke to pass through, with a short plastic bit on the end.

    That Old School Aroma

I'm still chasing the pipe tobacco aroma that I remember from my grandfather in the early 90's, and a handful of other times that I smelled pipe tobacco up until maybe the early 2000's. My grandfather didn't smoke a pipe for very long before he switched to stinky cigars, probably too much of a...

    How to Maintain Adequate Taste.

I try to light as gently as possible. Holding the flame just above the tobacco and gently drawing the heat down into it is enough to get it going, especially on a re-light. drawing the flame down into the bowl has a major negative effect on flavor.

    First Smoke with a Stinger

I just got my first estate pipe the other day, a very nice little "Short Snorter" pocket-sized pipe, with an aluminum stinger in it. I posted about it with pictures, here. I just smoked it for the first time. The infamous stingers are a frequent subject of beginner questions, so here is my...

    What's For Dinner?

I somehow ended up with about 20 pounds of onions that are beginning to grow sprouts, so I used up half of them by making Ragu alla Genovese, a pasta sauce made by braising beef with onions. Like a French onion soup, but cooked down to a thick sauce. Quite tasty with some rotini pasta. Not as...

My First Estate Pipe, "Short Snorter"

I'm pretty sure it's a Wally Frank, I came across that name while trying to find other pipes like it, but couldn't remember it.

My First Estate Pipe, "Short Snorter"

Just scored my first estate pipe from Ebay. In unsmoked condition, no less! I like small pipes, and I like saddle bits. I saw it and had to have it. If it was a bulldog too, I'd do a backflip. I mostly smoke while walking in the woods, so it looks like an ideal little pipe. It's been...

I Hated Half & Half—Because of the Burley?

Excellent, thanks a lot. Looking forward to trying out some tobacco-flavored tobacco.

I Hated Half & Half—Because of the Burley?

That's good to know, because from the descriptions, they sound pretty good.

I Hated Half & Half—Because of the Burley?

As more or less a beginner, I've been trying out tobaccos that I can find locally, which is pretty much limited to the OTC codger blends. Along with a couple Captain Black varieties, I got some Half & Half, which after watching a lot of reviews, I was really hoping I'd like. I've given it two...

Missouri Meerschaum Bit Mix and Match

I bought a couple new cobs recently, along with the Country Gentleman I already had. The Country Gentleman was my first pipe, and apparently I had a bad habit of clenching too tightly when I first started, because the tooth marks are deep enough that it's hard to get a pipe cleaner in the end...
