No one has yet mentioned tobacco moisture content. Water vapor is a byproduct of combustion, so your bottom-bowl leaves are going to be wetter than your top-bowl leaves. I don't know a lot about Joseph Stalin's cigarettes, but I do know you will probably maximize your pipe-smoking experience by putting your tobacco in your bowl and smoking it the way you enjoy your tobacco.- Peterson314
