    Life in a nutshell

But when you hear the Parable of the Elephant, you're not meant to haughtily conclude (as every single one of us would like to) that you're the sighted man watching this all go down, and everyone else is the blind men groping the beast. From the point of view of the parable-maker, we're all...

    Life in a nutshell

@retrogasm and atskywalker; My apologies, gentlemen--I was typing, or else I would have observed the 'cease-fire'. Interesting thread, at any rate!

    Life in a nutshell

If five men sitting in a room each hold a contradicting opinion about what's real, when are they closer to "reality"; when each man claims his position with certainty, to the exclusion of all others--or when each man admits doubt about his own thinking, and agrees to approach it skeptically? If...

    What are You Reading?

I read "Anger" a few months ago. I began to notice with Thich Naht Hanh's work that his books can be a bit repetitive if you've read a few of them. But "The Heart of the Buddha's Teachings" is still my go-to primer on the subject. Carver, that book sounds very interesting. I read "A Bintel...

    Life in a nutshell

I agree with you there. Morality is emotional rather than intellectual.

    Life in a nutshell

The Golden Rule is formulated subjectively because ethics can never be objective. It's Hume's Guillotine; there's no description of how things are that can tell you how they ought to be.

    Blowing back into the pipe?

I used to do this to puff loose ash out the top. Smokes wetter when I did. My ash dump routine is more satisfactory now--but I still puff through the pipe from time to time, mostly to satisfy my own desire to see that little curl of smoke rise out of the pipe.

    Life in a nutshell

When Thoreau went to build his cabin at Walden pond, he borrowed a friend's axe. "It's difficult to begin without borrowing," he writes. How applicable! It's difficult to answer this question without borrowing someone else's words. But I'll try. My most considered conviction about life is that...

    Slowing Down with Sixpence

I don't think you'll be disappointed, Jason! Sixpence is one of those blends that's "coaching" me to smoke better.

    Slowing Down with Sixpence

Labor Day. Shop's closed, dishes are done--laundry whirling away in the machine downstairs. A chance to slow down a bit, take her easy. "Maybe today?" I've been asking myself that a lot lately. It might have been six months ago when I bought that first tin of Sixpence, but until now the answer...

    Anyone from Boise,ID?

Google brings up Sturman's Smoke shop on North 10th Street--looks promising. You're not likely to find a pipe-dominant shop anywhere outside of a very large city. The best we can hope for in these dark days is a decent selection in a Cigar shop. "These are mad times we live in! MAD!" Not from...

How do YOU carry your pipe, tobacco and gear?

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/a-new-pipe-and-a-new-pouch That's a thread I posted a while back about a little case that I made with a belt clip. Fair warning: It's VERY image-heavy. But honestly, I don't use it much. Pipe in my hand, lighter and tool in my pocket, pipe cleaner behind...

    What's Your Favorite Sandwich?

This October will mark my tenth year in the sandwich industry; 8th year at the current shop. What I like to see in a customer is someone who appreciates that a good sandwich is a matter of balance. You get those guys who want roast beef and a mild white cheese, say Provolone--just meat and...

Stupid idea of the day: crowdfund a forum upgrade

The problem with Tapatalk, Nate, is that they're not content to let you have your app, and me have my app (my 'app' is called a Web browser...) No, no, no...they have to try and push their damnedable app on me whenever I visit the site, Every. Damned. Time.

    In Stock - Lane's 1-Q

 Is there any way you can set up a text alert for that, Brewshooter? Maybe a phone chain, so we can each call three people, who will each call three more people?

Stupid idea of the day: crowdfund a forum upgrade

The last thing on God's Green Earth that I need is some new-fangled "mobile" version of the site to "solve" the "problems" that I must be having by using my smartphone. I also don't want to be prompted to download Tapatalk every time I browse the site. But if you can avoid all that nonsense...

    Does Latakia cause olfactory fatigue?

When I smoked my first English blend--I think it was Frogmorton--I was stunned. "What is that fragrant and delicious woodsy-ness, that reminds me so much of my incense-swinging altar boy days!?" The second time I smoked, and every time after, I'm left wondering where that potency went. The...
