Do You Smoke More Or Less In Fall And Winter?

I smoke only in the Fall and Winter. I tend not to smoke when it gets hot outside.

    Shortages of Briar

I should add that this isn't in a recent issue of the Times. This was published in 1964. That wasn't clear.

    Shortages of Briar

I ran across this interesting article in the NY Times about a shortage of pipes in 1964. I had no idea, of course. There are some interesting things in here, including the price of a new Dunhill at $35. Also noted was a "dwindling supply of 100 year old briar roots." It seems that the...

Choosing a Pipe to Suit Your Face?

I've never actually thought about this, but I would argue that the masculinity or femininity of a shape is arbitrary. It's a product of cultural conventions. I spend a lot of time in countries other than the US and I suspect what people might think looks good or bad--or even if a pipe can look...

***What Are You Smoking?*** (November, 2019)

A predictably wonderful post-T-meal smoke after all have gone to bed. Quiet and calm, with gentle rain falling. Peterson's University Flake in a Dunhill Tanshell Prince from 1964. Glass of red wine. The Comoy's tin just happened to be sitting on the table.

***What Are You Smoking?*** (November, 2019)

Tonight's choice is an Ascorti 1991 Xmas pipe with Peterson's University Flake while taking a walk in the cool evening air.

    Jimmy Craig-era Ashton’s (Are Awesome)

Yes, that's part of what attracted me to it. It's quite different from the typical Ashton. I will report on the smoke when it comes in.

    Ardor

It's somewhat bigger than I was expecting. I tend toward small or medium sized pipes and this is the largest I now own. But I think I'm going to like it a lot.

    Jimmy Craig-era Ashton’s (Are Awesome)

Just purchased this JC Ashton from smoking pipes made in 2009. It's unsmoked. Looking forward to getting it.

    Castello & Dunhill

I think the $150 line is about right. There are plenty of pipes under that line that smoke great; above that line we are getting into aesthetics. I don't disagree with BROBS comment that for some this may also involve brand-name consciousness. However, it is unfair to apply that to everyone...

    Castello & Dunhill

I have no idea what a frazing machine is--I actually know nothing about how pipes are made. The link is very interesting, so thanks for posting that. I don't think, however, that the page covers everything in the factory. Also, does Dunhill let visitors see everything? When I visited the...

    Castello & Dunhill

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but you also don't know me, so I'm not sure how you can judge my motivations. That said, you are simply wrong to state that "it's about a brand name and how you feel about the pipe... simple as that!" I agree with the second half, not the first...
