***What Are You Smoking, November 2022?***

32° and clear. Italian carved poker derivative volcano with 3 year old Red Queen V that was gifted years ago (thanks again). I've been threatening to crack the jar, and I finally did. It was a fantastic smoke. 8.5/10

    Cleaning my pipe and cake.

Could be. I do know the cotton balls "pull in" something. Depending how well you cut the cake, and sand down the walls if necessary, the cotton balls come out yellow, from light to dark. Kind of the same visual results from my experience. I came to like the cotton balls because of how much...

Not cleaning my pipe for one day

I think a wise man maybe once said, "Keep it simple, stupid."

    Cleaning my pipe and cake.

+1 on the cotton balls over salt. I personally find the cotton balls to work as well, and as has been said, it's an easier clean up. Now, if anyone has a scientific reason, with chemical reasoning, maybe I'm wrong about this? There's also a retort process and scrubbing with soap and water for...

Not cleaning my pipe for one day

Not to derail the thread, but are there any discussions about "too many pipes" on the board? Not in a joking way of "you can never have too many pipes." I did a cursory search yesterday and didn't find anything. I find that when I have too many pipes, my brain scrambles, and I then go to the...

    Finally Scratched The Morta Itch

Sharp blue stem. I like how morta takes a dye, and I like that Italianesque perspective of colored stems on them too.

    Cleaning and resting

In my experience, in the old days working at shops, most smokers either don't clean their pipes at all or sporadically clean their pipes. It's probably different now with the internet and people following so many rules, but most of our customers didn't even buy pipe cleaners. They'd own one or...

    Quest for a pipe polish

You can use a large, long bristled horsehair brush to do a very nice polishing job. Buffers are nice, but if you don't have the space or cash for one, the brush is a nice alternative. Bigger brushes are nicer than the tiny ones. You can really get a nice, long swipe on the briar and not have...

That old Estate flavor and smell

A friend gave me some Bacti-Stat, and I found that works really well. I have to say that I wouldn't hesitate to use Dawn, or whatever you have handy. Palmolive is a little more gentle, but it would also work well. I will say that you will have to re-apply wax to the pipe for obvious reasons...

That old Estate flavor and smell

warm water, soap, and a tube brush. repeat a few times. rinse well. I did the alcohol and pipe cleaners (regular and bristled) for decades, but now I use running water. It works better, is less work, and is cheaper.

How To Home Stove Tobacco - Informational Only

I believe Pease talks about temperature somewhere, doesn't he? In reference to people microwaving tobacco, and I think he says something about 165° being the no-no point. Don't hold me to that figure though. That's what is coming to mind.

Big Dollar Pipes vs Lower Priced Pipes

I think it matters how much psychology plays into your consumption of things. For a utilitarian, it plays a small role. For an art collector, it plays a much larger role. You know...are you a minimalist or a hoarder? How does your brain work? I used to collect pipes that cost several...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2022?***

34°, clear, and a little breezy. British prince with new Night Train. A really, really good smoke. 8.5/10 I don't know if I got a funky block of Night Train or what, but in the past, it was solid as a brick and best cut with a knife. This new block practically fell apart when I tore off the...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2022?***

70° and clear. American-Italian-British collaborative, cantered billiard with Newminster: No.403 Superior Round Slices. It was a solid smoke. 7/10 I haven't smoked this pipe in a very long time. It has a deceptively large chamber, taking 2.5 LNF flakes to fill it, just to give an idea. You'd...

    Re-visiting Lane Ltd. HGL.

When I managed a shop, I had a customer who owned a single pipe and who smoked 1-2LBs of HGL per month. Customers like this are/were the backbone of tobacco shops. The steady customer by whom you could set your clocks. He never bought anything else from us. Not a tamper. Not pipe cleaners...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2022?***

48° and clear. Italian rusticated poker in a British tradition with 5 year old LNF. Lots of caramels and rich, sweet tones. An upper level smoke. 8.5/10

    Please "School Me" on Perique.

It's a burley, and there is not way of them knowing whether it will be peppery or fruity. Each barrel does its own dance and is a gamble.

Cellaring: How Much is Too Much?

I only have maybe 10LBs cellaring, and I regularly think about how awful it will be if something happens to me. They'll have no idea what they're looking at and why this or that is worth their time to sell. And they will have no interest in trying to post 100 posts so they're eligible to sell...

    Pipe Storage

Half of them are piled in a somewhat orderly fashion in a large ashtray that I don't use as an ashtray, and the others are hanging on a pegboard from wire cradles I make from coated copper wire I was gifted in a giant spool. If I didn't have the wire, I'd buy some fishing rod clasps on the said...

Do you find burnt rim unpleasant to the eye?

with certain shapes, you can't avoid the staining from smoke and tars. if you like the shape, you live with it. I have a couple estates where the original owner didn't seem to mind scorching the wood, and I guess it didn't bother me enough to not bid on them. I've never personally scorched...
