Pipe for a beginner?
Actually, the ring is around the shank. Some people like it, some don't. One of the cool things about it is that a metal helps the briar keep its shape and reduces the chance of the stem loosening. I have the Kapet X220, and it is one of my favorite pipes.- grafikchaos

One hundred bucks is great, if you can afford that at any given time. You can pick up really good, new, economy pipes that will give you a lifetime of service. Help me to grok the cob
I'm kind of weird here, but I like to put English blends in my cob. The cob material lends a very faint sweetness to the tobacco that I don't get with my briar pipes. Everclear substitute?
I use Jack Daniels'. Any flavor imparted is negligible, since I tend to smoke aros. Gets the pipes clean just fine, and I can always take a little nip, or three.- grafikchaos
