    Briar's Provence- Important?

This is all mostly nonsense, your depiction of processes is as backwards as your history. Blocks are cut from fresh roots and boiled. Then dried marginally and delivered to the buyer, who can do as they please. Aging has always been an in-house thing because no briar cutter could sit on a...

    Briar's Provence- Important?

Hey, no offense, but I might have tried one. It MIGHT be that you're not the only guy who buys old pipes. It MIGHT be that I'm sitting on a stack of old Master Crafts and Marxmans and Monarchs and Lees and Smoke Masters and Kaywoodies and even old Dunhills if I can remember where I put...

    Briar's Provence- Important?

I feel sorry right now for the folks who think 3 dollar drug store pipes are the epitome of something.

    I sometimes do that too.

    Briar's Provence- Important?

"Best" briar. What do we even mean by that? Best for what? Best in what way? Best sandblast results? Tightest grain? Cuz these are opposite, in reality. Best smoking? What would that mean? Driest? Or least amount of "woody" flavor? Meerschaum is the best briar in that...

    Question for debate

Yup. People fighting over Penzance and I'd rather have Commonwealth. Or Old Ironsides. Special stuff is fun, but good stuff is easy to come by.

Robert McConnell Blends - Your Opinion?

The Cake is totally differnt, a va/per with maybe a little burley depending on who you ask.

Robert McConnell Blends - Your Opinion?

I thought the "Oriental Square" was basically not very close to Durbar - lacking in both the Dunhill mouthfeel and the sort of perfumey edges that Durbar has. Not a bad blend, but not really Durbar-esque to my palate.

Robert McConnell Blends - Your Opinion?

The Oriental is a little softer than some, I steer people to "Skiff" or "Kensington" for a perkier experience that way, but Scottish Cake and Scottish Flake are both lovely, top shelf stuff, and the red va is nice too. Typical high-quality german-made tobacco.

Why Algerian Briar was Highly Regarded

Yazid el Bouchemat was selling briar from Algeria for years, he's come and gone a few times, bit of a shyster to deal with, really. But there's been no real problem getting algerian briar. The problem is it's no good for making "nice" pipes. It's dirty, pitty, soft. I've got some, I might...

    Pipe Making Hardware

The term is "French Wheel" and it can be made with anything that spins, from a motor with a shaft up to a lathe headstock. Dust collection is... mandatory.

    Dunhill Date zero

So what exactly is your question? What number does your pipe have on it? Cuz that's the answer.

    Dunhill Date zero

Suffix zero is either 1960 or 1970 depending on the font. Pretty easy to follow the chart. http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/dunhill/cledat-en1a.html

    Bowl Material or Engineering?

Good briar is briar that grew 2222 years in an Elvin forest protected by beautiful Dryads. The briar cutters do a dance known as the "Mamushka", prior to attempting to harvest any wood. Ritual sacrifice, prayer, displays of bravado, etc. When they find the 2222 year old plant, they dig it...

    How are Pipes Rusticated?

It's a work in progress. On one hand, any technique is tool-dependent, and I have what I have and other guys have what they have. But I definitely want to find a way to make a really deep, really random texture that doesn't take me 4 hours and leave my fore-arms with tendinitis. Very...
