    Vintage Versus Modern Factory Pipes

I think all briar pipes are one some continuum of machines to handmade. Much of the stummel can be turned on a lathe with a programmed pattern, but the heel and transition seems to need work by hand.

    Vintage Versus Modern Factory Pipes

I have no idea how to classify the various manufacturers. Surely clay pipes are the closest to industrial factory production, and lots of “factory“ pipes are just a bunch of expert craftsman under a single roof.

    Pipe Size Preferences?

I’m mostly smoking pressed tobacco, so I need smallish pipes to keep the time reasonable. Were I smoking ribbon, I’d need to pull out the big ones.

    Vintage Versus Modern Factory Pipes

I recently had an inaugural Virginia flake in a little NOS Chacom apple, which I was informed was likely made in the 1950s. I bought it because I like light pipes (but without thin walls), simple finishes, and unobtrusive bits. I am inexperienced with the properties of vintage pipes, and it got...

Doctor and Master of Pipes Awards

You seem to implying that qualifications and credentials are more than their own mutual admiration society these days. I hate to contradict, but I’m afraid its mutual admiration societies all the way down. The only difference is which ones have the best press.

WHO says "Big Tobacco Is 'Poisoning Our Planet"

You’re giving their propaganda too much credence. Their goal is not to nanny you into a healthier lifestyle. Their goal is global governance, i.e., control for themselves over the rest of us, and they’re diligently working toward this goal.

Anyone Have Luck With Altinay Meers?

I haven’t seen many. And none of vintage proportions. Probably have to ask.

Anyone Have Luck With Altinay Meers?

Mine are great. I got them straight from Altinay, I’m not sure if they’re any different from the ones at TP. Mine don’t take filters. No pipe requires 9mm filters. Maybe they accommodate them, but you can do without.

    Virginia and cigarette taste?

My first three years were a survey of all the various genres and blenders, some great, some offputting, as you say. At the end my palate had changed so much I have had to begin the course over entirely, and now I come to substantially different conclusions. It reminds me of my education in...

    Online Pipe Quality

I have gotten well drilled pipes without any issues for $50. But I have not been able to find a price floor for getting that quality every time. You will even occasionally run across a complaint about an S. Bang, for example.

    Virginia and cigarette taste?

Canadian cigarettes are, by law, plain Virginia tobacco. So yes, it will initially just taste like cigarettes. It took me about two years of surveying the other types of blends before my palate grew accustomed enough to get all the other, more subtle flavours in Virginia pipe blends. You may...

    When Its A Bit Nippley

The season changes my choice of pipe more than tobacco. The meers go away for the winter and come back with the robins.

    Mold?

I don’t think the work done by those guys proves what they think it does. I wrote why here: https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/stonehaven-plume-or-mold.73273/page-2#post-36039093

    More SPC Hogshead Is Coming.

This limited edition thing is working out so well that even regular production blends are being bought up like they’re limited.

Canadian Customs Hitting Tobacco More Frequently.

I don’t know what you gents are on about. If the CBSA misses or undercharges an incoming package, I calculate the duty owed and send in a cheque to the CRA, as law requires. I certainly don’t post about how I get tobacco tax free online where anyone can see it.

English Blends with Little to No Latakia ?

Another vote for Presbyterian. There’s so little Latakia that there are even arguments about whether it has any or not. Also, it’s just a great English smoke.
