    G L Pease Sextant

Danno, that is such a good question, I'm going to stick in the mailbag for the next issue of Ask G.L. Pease. Yeah, I'm a jerk, but I just made sure I'l have one more reader next month. ;)

    This might have been easier.

    G L Pease Sextant

It's not what most of us would consider an "aromatic," but yes, it's infused with a little rum. If you remember my old blend, Mephisto, you'll find some similarities in this one, though it's also very different. The dark-fired Kentucky gives it a nice stoutness, and the rum adds a hint of...

Impressed by Escudo... any suggestion for Perique?

How about G.L. Pease's (oh, wait...that's me) Fillmore? It's got about the same level of perique in it, surrounded by some really nice US grown virginias, pressed and sliced into flakes. It's deep, rich, slightly fruity, and if the 2007 tin that I've got open now is any indication, ages splendidly.

Disappointment and Redemption - New Article from G.L. Pease

Mick, you're indeed quite right that Haddo's and Barbary Coast contain some additional flavoring, but as you guessed, they're real brandy and rum, not aromatic essences or artificial flavorings. Of course, they will leave a hint of their presence behind, but it smokes out quickly and easily...

Adam, it's a little scary how well you accomplished your translation.

    GKCPC on FaceBook

I think Kevin pretty much covered it, though he failed to mention that you also have to tell people when you're brushing your teeth, and whether or not the toothpaste fell into the sink. I've been on FB for a while, and it has become increasingly useless as they have altered "features" and added...

    Artificial Tobacco

Sheet tobacco is certainly out there, used by the cigarette industry and by makers of some cheap cigars. But, it's not quite what this would make it seem to be. It's basically reclaimed tobacco, tobacco cutoffs, dust from the cutter, and so on, and when it's used, at least in the cigarette...

Moisture Content of Tobacco, Its Restoration

Pipe Novelist: The evaporation of water, even at room temperature, actually is a simplified form of distillation. The water vapor that escapes the moist towel and finds its way to the tobacco below will be quite pure. However, there may be, and from your description of your water, there likely...

My physics of this are boggling me

There is such a thing as a drift drill, which is a small burr bit at the end of a flex shaft, encased in a rigid but bendable tube. Luigi Viprati uses this sort of arrangement for many of his dramatically curved shanks. But, I don't think it was necessary here. If you imagine the tobacco chamber...

    Ready Rubbed?

Ready Rubbed and ribbon cut are different things, hence the different nomenclature, though the difference can be subtle. Maybe a glimpse into the manufacturing will help clarify the terms. To make ribbon cut, irrespective of how coarse or fine the ribbon, tobacco is lightly pressed into a...

New Dunhill Tobacco Collaboration w/The Rolling Stones

I tried it, of course, wanting to know what the competition is up to. After filling my pipe, I found I had sticky fingers, and had a very hard time striking a match. Once I did get the thing lit, it went up like Jumpin' Jack Flash. The smell was enough to have me tossed from the house and exiled...

    Quick Aging Question

Different manufacturers do different things with respect to dating. Some use codes, some use actual dates. Some use the date of the tobacco's manufacture, whilst others use the date it's put in the tins. Mine have the actual date the tobacco is made. Sometimes, it's all tinned on one day, other...

    Perique or VA/Per Recommendation

In fact, "light and mild" don't really go with "VA/per," but on the milder side, I'd recommend my own Stratford, which is quite approachable. It's been one of the sleeper blends in my catalogue, almost from its beginning, but recently has taken off, and has received quite a few very nice comments.

    Who is this "random" fellow

Random was an interesting fellow, with some interesting ideas in pipe construction. His "shotgun" approach to airway design was that from bowl to button, the airway should have the same cross-sectional area if the pipe is going to smoke ideally. Can't really disagree, there, though I think the...
