    When I used xikar trays, I normally just put them pore side up and filled them. I let them soak about 20 minutes and then shake off the excess and wipe them down. I now only use Boveda packs.

    Sometimes beads will take a while to expand, especially the first time but I think 30 minutes should have been enough.

    Did you put it upside down in the tray? I think that's the only way it'll absorb the water

    Exactly as seanv said, "low and slow." Moving too quickly will destroy them, causes them to swell and crack.

    I think it depends on the person. If you can taste the flavors easily enough I say have at it. I smoked mostly milder sticks in the beginning (and still do) but I bought quality cigars.
