Castleford & PipNet Reamer - Side by Side Comparison (Pic Heavy)

You're most welcome, mephistopheles! Methinks for casual use, unless you start restoring, the Senoir will suffice to keep cake trimmed. Start from the bottom of the chamber and work your way up.

Things to avoid while pipe smoking?

+1 on smoking bents in the car, but I am actually serious. I once owned a 7" Canadian by Ashton. It was a rainy day so my driver side window was slightly open, just enough to let the smoke come out. For some odd reason, I turned my head hard left and hit the window with the bowl..... 8O...

***What Are You Smoking *** (Feb. 2015)

Esoterica Woodbridge in a 1976 Shell 410H bent Quaint thingie ( a bent Apple with a flat bottom that doesn't sit )

Castleford & PipNet Reamer - Side by Side Comparison (Pic Heavy)

It really depends what you're doing with it. A proper Senior reamer ( beware of the ones with cast blades, they are dull and just rub the cake ) will do a more precise job, and is also useful for fine-tuning previous troubled areas in the chamber. I prefer to use a modified oyster knife and...

Il Ceppo pipe shape ID please

Bent Apple. Hawkbill stummel sits much higher on the bowl.

Older Rusticated / Blasted Cleaning Tips

Correct! Old wax + hand grime. Use a hairdryer to get the stuff soft, scrub off with a brush, let it cool down, repeat as needed. If you have a heat gun and a buffer with a Sissal wheel, it happens faster.

    Rare French Made Castello Pipe

A rare Italian basket pipe that seems to have spent some time outdoors in the mud ....

    New Acquisition: Ewe Jopp

Had a few Uwe Jopp pipes on the bench, very well made, with typical German engineering and attention to detail. Speaking of, what's with the fang marks by the button in the last picture? Or is that the lighting?

    SG Squadron Leader

I am not aware of any of the SG blends being sold by the ounce anymore since they are only imported in tins and 250g bags. Never bought Squadron Leader by the box, is it moister than the tinned ?

    Ennerdale Flake

Well, you could give G&H Best Brown #2 a shot. To my palate, it's the base flake used to make Ennerdale. Both are lovely blends. You may also want to visit Glengary Flake and Grassmere Flake, same stuff, different flavorings.

    Advice needed

How wet is your tobacco, what pipes are you using, and how fast are you puffing? Are you using a torch lighter? There are many variables in this pipe equation I think my mobile connection took a dump. I thought I was the first to reply. Are you trying to smoke your cobs and Savs with the...

Should I have this 1950 Dunhill Shell Restored? (Pic Heavy)

As long as the chamber is healthy, and nothing is broken, it should clean up just fine. I wouldn't restain or top the bowl, or anything of the sort, as it will take away from the character of the pipe. Be gentle with it.

Cold Canadian Air Coming To Carolina

It's not the temps in the 20F range that make it perceivably cold, but rather the wild swings from week to week, and the humidity which makes the cold colder. Having transplanted to SPC Land ( halfway between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington ) from Anchorage little over a year and a half ago, I am...

    Germain's: Plum Cake

Germain Plum Cake is awesome stuff, although a bit odd. To me, it tastes like G&H Kendal Dark with the flavoring from SG Kendal Flake. Unique and fairly stout.

What Shape Would You Say This Caminetto Pipe Is?

I'll go for LOVAT, although those are usually more compact numbers. As for opening the draw, have it professionally done, or use a tapered bit on a lathe on fairly slow ( 100 rpm to start with ) speed until you get close to the slot, then have the slot opened. Acrylic is fairly unforgiving, and...

You're quite welcome, and please excuse the omission of the title  . It's been a long day, and the kid just crawled out of the bath tub as I was posting this ( she's 3 )

    Becker

Congrats, Simon! My handiwork, smoked it for a while, traded it to Tim, I guess he grew tired of it? You will enjoy it.

    Penzance match???

What makes Penzance special, to my palate, is the interplay of the Latakia and VA that creates the Frankincense sweet smokiness, onto which the rest of the components build. One other blend from my limited array of experiences has that incense quality : well aged SG Balkan Flake. However, it...

Aromatics in your rotation? With a dedicated pipe?

menuhin If my memory serves me right, two Planta blends were immensely enjoyable: Anno MMVII , with a Billberry flavor, and Anno MMXII, with the Marula fruit flavor, which equated to me as Chrysanthemum flowers. Keep in mind, at least to my palate, aromatics are at their best at a slightly dry...

Aromatics in your rotation? With a dedicated pipe?

May I add the offerings from Planta, made in Germany, haven't found one to disappoint, as well as most of the Peterson aromatics ( esp Connoisseurs Choice ). A new favorite of mine has become the much controversial Cornell & Diehl Captain Bob's Blend, but I do not believe it would be available...
