Are International Pipe Purchases are Getting More Risky?

FedEx seems to be the service that is having issues right now. As I mentioned in another thread, Novelli has switched from using FedEx for pipes to using DHL. I know of a US customer who was spending on average a grand a month with them who, even though he eventually got his pipes at no extra...

    Estervals: Is The Party Over?

Fed Ex has on a few occasions added on an “FDA inspection fee” to the duties, (modest), plus the fees (reports vary from modest to WTF) for using the kind services of their customs brokerage subsidiary, which you never asked for. But that is for pipes. Novelli in Rome has switched from...

    Estervals: Is The Party Over?

A shipping buddy would have to pay the 20% VAT.

    Estervals: Is The Party Over?

FedEx is a private company and can make it’s own rules. But there is nothing illegal about shipping pipe tobacco from Germany to the US. The United States Code Annotated and the Code of Federal Regulations are both on line and searchable. Cite me any such statute or regulation that you can find...

    Estervals: Is The Party Over?

Sigh. No. DHL has its own customs brokerage subsidiary. The post office was kicking Esterval packages back to DHL. Part of DHL’s services offered to shippers is to retrieve goods that would otherwise not be deliverable. My suspicion is that DHL is making these decisions on its own. Correctly...

    Support B&M Stores

Traditional B&M’s don’t stand a chance. The only pipe tobacco that will survive a face to face requirement are blends that can be pushed out through c-stores, hookah and head stores, an, in this part of the country, the ubiquitous discount beer, cigarette and “pipe tobacco you can roll...

    Estervals: Is The Party Over?

Clear confusion at best on Herr Harms part. I have yet to hear one US customer who has EVER complained about PAYING customs on an Estervals order. They never got the chance. And as @sablebrush52 has pointed out repeatedly and has been confirmed by others, including me,US Customs does not return...

    Support B&M Stores

If you don’t see good service and selection from a nearby B&M now, if they stay open after some event happens that causes you to “need them”, they still won‘t have good service and selection. Cellar. I have even been stocking up on pipe cleaners.

    GH Ropes

For several of the reasons gone into in some of the above posts re: Empire or Commonwealth leaf, trying to rank Gawith Hoggarth blends on a “sauce scale” only makes a modest amount of sense.

    Other Considerations For Cellaring

Optimum for me is smoking something even just a few years old and comparing the price I paid to the current price. Even more optimum is if the blend has changed or been discontinued. I KNOW that improves the taste of the tobacco.

    Other Considerations For Cellaring

If you like oxidation, oxygen is needed.? Aerobic aging, anerobic aging, one might be better than the other for you. As long as the tobacco is in smokeable condition years down the road, you are ahead of the game. Everytime someone mentions aerobic aging, I can’t help it that mental images of...

    Other Considerations For Cellaring

I sold empty mason jars late last summer/early fall after I had transferred the contents to Mylar. Stores were mostly out of jars. I got pretty much full retail. I had bought most on sale in previous years.

Punched in the Face by Virginia Excise Tax on Tobacco Products

Our legislators in Tennessee are very divided about raising taxes on anything. . They initially set the threshold for out of state sellers at $500,000 annual sales. A portion of the 9.75% goes to county and municipal governments. They screamed bloody murder, so the threshold was lowered to...

Punched in the Face by Virginia Excise Tax on Tobacco Products

Emphatically agree. First they came for Cigarettes delivered by UPS, etc.,from Indian Reservation based sellers but I had quit cigarettes by then; Then states like Washington started banning shipments of pipe tobacco to their residents, but I did not live in Washington; Then the feds...

Punched in the Face by Virginia Excise Tax on Tobacco Products

Still is open. If an online seller of any product doesn’t do $100,001 on an annual basis of shipments to Tennessee, they are not required to collect sales tax on their shipments to a Tennessee customer. JR, Smoking PIpes and Pipes and Cigars are the only ones who, at the present moment, hit me...

You are Guaranteed to get One Hard-to-get Blend. Which One would You Choose?

In August/September of 2020, 250 g boxes of Kendal Plug showed up at at leas 4 shops with a web operation. They didn’t last long anywhere.

You are Guaranteed to get One Hard-to-get Blend. Which One would You Choose?

Blue a Mosque by E&C was a shag cut Turkish blend cigarette tobacco. The six other blends were superb. The last was made circa 1989. I got a bunch when they announced the ending to the trade. I last acquired some around 1985 when a Texas friend found some at a small shop in Arkansas. He...

Alas! I Can't Find Any Gawith Hoggarth's Twist Tobacco Anywhere

A shipment of GH should be in the hands of US retailers this month. If it includes ropes, which it very well might, you can save some $ over Switzerland. And likely get fresher product. The flavoring on ropes is sprayed on, freshness is material.
