Salivating When Clenching
Maybe if the mouth is too dry, then saliva automatically came out to wet/cool the mouth cavity etc..? I had some issues in the past, nowadays i always have some drink around- dingdong

Getting Taste Back
In my case with Private Stock - it is best on the Stanwell Royal Briar 336 (short, right)..i have tried on the GBD (center) and many times, the Stanwell does better. Yet the GBD is best for Loch Ness (Drucquer). So if i got into trouble i would try to stick with one blend and one pipe for few...- dingdong

How Dry Is Too Dry
Agree with textures and combustability (ease of burn)..ambient temperature also comes into play...for instance hot humid area in Jakarta.. vs cold and dry ambience in northern hemisphere...for me dry tobacco leads to sore throat. Unless washed with Dry Martini puffy puffy puffy , that is- dingdong

I had it from time to time - either from changing too many pipe/different tobaccos, smoking (clove) cigarettes, or simply too much pipes which gave me the "extended tongue bites". Everything taste the same (like a hot cardboard) and i tend to change pipe/blend which of course only make the...- dingdong
