New Gawith Releases (in US) Confusion

If it says vintage cut, then it is a thicker cut of the same. The twists are the same but different thickness - bogie/X/XXX. If it says a sliced twist, then it's the twist sliced. If its called a plug, it's a plug, if it says a cut plug, then its a plug sliced - e/g basically a flake. It is says...

New Gawith Releases (in US) Confusion

The American Blends are NOT blending tobaccos - its just what the range is called - American Blend and then the flavour. We only do two specific blending tobaccos - a black cavendish and a latakia and they are only in bulk. But I guess you can take any tobacco and mix it with something else to...

Post from Jeremy McKenna on Mac Baren closure

Ah ok. I will LOL! Just because I do not smoke a pipe (regularly) does not mean running my family company is not a passion. I wouldn't be here if it was not. It's a ridiculous comment to make. Especially as you have no idea as to most of what is going on. There was no gas lighting about tins...

Post from Jeremy McKenna on Mac Baren closure

God knows. Clearly he does not have a clue. Especially as Gawith's remains in the family ownership, as it has been for 200+ years. After John Gawith died and there was non family management running it for a short while, there was some serious concerns but luckily family stepped back in at the...

    Square Tin Seal: Recent Experience

There is only Gawith Hoggarth tobacco made in the UK full stop. We are the only tobacco manufacturer here. Germains are in Jersey so not technically part of the UK. Anything else you buy in the UK outside these two manufacturers is imported. A vast majority of it will be made by STG.

New Interview with Per G Jensen on Mac Baren's Demise

Thanks but it was a one off in the UK only and would probably not pass FDA regs for the States anyway

New Interview with Per G Jensen on Mac Baren's Demise

I think it's easily seen from the increased deliveries to the USA that production has increased in the last couple of years. If you listen to Jeremy McKenna's podcast he explains a little about the FDA and how you cannot easily introduce new blends to the US market legally. So whether any new...

New Interview with Per G Jensen on Mac Baren's Demise

Actually not the case - we produce many ribbon cuts and shag tobaccos and RYO. In fact in the UK and other markets these make up a far greater percentage of our sales than flakes, plugs and twists. Again the world is much bigger than just the USA!

    Smoking Law in Great Britain

This is the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which was announced in the King’s speech on 7 November 2023 and introduced to Parliament on 20 March 2024. We then had a new government and so it was re-introduced to parliament in November 2024. Its now at committee stage for changes and consultations and...

STG update from your good friend Bradley

Unfortunately our current government does seem keen to follow the NZ example (before it was repealled I believe on age limit going up each year to buy) . Differentiation made mostly for tax. They tend to lump pipe tobacco in with everything else with regards to regulations but usually introduce...

STG update from your good friend Bradley

Not in the UK and places in Europe. Cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco is taxed far more highly than pipe tobacco and the UK government sets what the cut is for RYO versus pipe. Snuff has no duty on it currently.

    Hedge Building in Great Britain

Here in the Lake District we have dry stone walls everywhere. They run for miles over the fells and were built many many years ago. It's a dying art now knowing how to properly build them. Different areas have different ways of dividing fields and enclosing livestock. Down south in areas, there...

    Lakeland Help

"Interestingly enough, back then it flew off the shelves for so many smokers hating it. You had to be quick when a drop was announced. Stays in stock quite a bit longer now" Probably stays in stock longer now as we are sending far more than ever before and more regularly and far more blends...

If Nasal Snuff Is Still Here

The predecessor company to Gawith's started out making snuff 250 ish years ago. Its where the tobacco company has its roots. Its now a much smaller part of our business but we still do around 20 different snuffs. Gawith's Original is strangely not actually made by us or for us. In some long...

How Long do Lakeland Toppings Last When Cellared?

Such naivety as to how business works..........but yes ultimately old management was changed by the directors.

How Long do Lakeland Toppings Last When Cellared?

LOL! Although I suppose you could say that - you know in a 'new management' actually wanted to do things legally kind of way and keep the business going, ensure the company and legacy carried on, not constantly lose money, new management wanted to make good quality tobacco not stuff that was...

How Long do Lakeland Toppings Last When Cellared?

Well STG pretty much has the monopoly in Europe and makes blends for many other companies so I am sure you will still be left with plenty else to choose from. And you still have C&D in the USA. i am sure that some of the other smaller blenders will likely find an alternative way to continue some...

How Long do Lakeland Toppings Last When Cellared?

Admin does verify company owners/representatives. Not sure why it would be thought I am the owner's wife. Pretty sure I have never once straight out called anyone an idiot. Where as I have been straight out insulted, called a liar, other names besides, in fact some down right nasty things have...

How Long do Lakeland Toppings Last When Cellared?

We still have the same staff. And believe me, when I bring up points like this in our production meetings they are baffled that people think blends have changed. A bit like the folklore of Lakeland sauce or essence.......
