What are the rules to transition from "New Member" to something else? Is it based upon reaction score or number of posts? I joined in 2020 but still show as New Member.

I would like the titles to reflect the content of the message and not something vague or obtuse.

Latakia Burnout - How Long does it Last?

I’ve been enjoying latakia blends for decades. I find most latakia blends to be disappointing. The only latakia blends that I like are Dunhill and Balkan Sobranie. I would quickly burnout on latakia if I couldn’t get my favorites.

Swabbed With Vodka, Now Taste Anise

Baby wipes likely have fragrances and other foul tasting chemicals.

    School me on Propylene Glycol

I have noticed that some tobacco blends do not dry and have a rubbery feel to them. When smoked, those blends don't burn well or stay lit, have a harsh/hot taste, and leave excess moisture in the bowl. I assumed it was from PG. Some manufacturers use it heavily. I don't buy tobacco from those...

    Pipe Cleaners?

I use Vauen and White Elephant. Both have similar good construction: sturdy wire that does not collapse when pushed into stem and no shedding. The odd thing is that they both have inconsistent diameters but I sort the small ones for smaller pipe stems and leave the larger diameters for my...

    Ennerdale

I'm not an aromatic smoker but I decided to try Ennerdale after reading some good comments here. It is one of the few aromatics that I like. I even liked the smell from the tin (bag). The flavor smoking was much less strong than the tin.

    Fun Blending Your Own

I do the same. The key is for one bowl. If you like it then you can make it in larger quantities. The other key is to remember the tobaccos and respective percentages used.

    Tobacco Suggestions

You've made good choices with the Dunhill/Peterson blends. As tobefrank mentioned, the blends you mentioned contain latakia. For a non-latakia blend try Dunhill/Peterson Ye Olde Signe.

    Early Tobacco Use in America

Scientific American article From a few tobacco seeds, they speculate that early Americans were smoking or chewing.

What Oddities/Attributes do You Look for in a Pipe?

I agree with uncoated chamber. I forgot to mention in my original post.

What Oddities/Attributes do You Look for in a Pipe?

My number one attribute is that it must be lightweight (40 grams or less). An open draw is good but that is difficult to measure by simply looking at draft hole and stem. I don't like exotic shapes or excessively large or very small.

A Question of Proper Cake Thickness

I like minimal cake. More cake means less tobacco per smoke. I use Kleen Reem tool that I bought at a pipe show. It looks like it was made in the 1960's. I also use a pipe knife to clear cake at the bottom that the Kleen Reem can't reach. Most of my pipes get reamed about once per year.

    Dark Star

I gave up trying to get it to burn. I like many of the other McClelland flakes. Maybe try mixing it with another tobacco that could help with the combustion.

    Nightcap + Rustica

I recently bought a few tins of Mac Baren Rustica. Having read about Rustica's nicotine punch, I was afraid to smoke it straight. Instead, I added some to Nightcap (about 5 to 1 ratio of Nightcap to Rustica). It was a pleasant, full-bodied, smoke. Shortly after, I finished, I broke out in a cold...

How Large is Your Pipe Collection in Proportion to How Much You Smoke?

I own 14 pipes. I average 10 smokes per week which is 520 smokes per year. I rotate all of them regularly. So that works out to about 37 smokes per pipe per year.

    Your Own Private Blend

I almost never smoke a commercial blend as is. I like to mix various blends. I've found a few good combinations.

Filling the Bowl with Tobacco-What to Use?

I put tobacco on 8.5 x 11 sheet of printer paper. It works well if I need tobacco to dry. I hold pipe over paper and pinch tobacco to add to pipe. Excess falls on paper. Fold paper into a curve to pour remainder into pipe or back into the tobacco tin/jar.

    Breaking in a New Pipe

I avoid buying pipes with coatings. If a new pipe has a coating, I remove it. I like to break-in a pipe with a Virginia blend. I fill it up an smoke it like my other pipes. One time, I smoked a heavy latakia blend in a new pipe and the flavor remained in the pipe. I will not do that again.

    Drucquer And Sons, Blairegowrie

A few years ago I bought a 100g tin that I really enjoyed. I liked it so much that I immediately reordered a 200g tin. For some reason the 200g tin was not as enjoyable as it was way too smokey. The 100g tin seemed less smokey and maybe a little sweeter.
