    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

Just wanted to say thanks for all the tips. As many mentioned above, it seems that, for me, drying the tobacco way down (too far down in at least one case) is the key. The smoke is cooler, I can sip slowly, and my tongue feels normal, even at 2-3 bowls a day. I am even beginning to taste some...

    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

@hmhaines - thanks. This is good info. I plan to resume my journey tomorrow. I'll take a look at those blends. Gonna go slow slow slow. Glad to know I'm not an unusual new pipe smoker!

    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

I am reluctantly taking the weekend off. It's cold and rainy here in NY anyway. Still would like a pipe, though...thanks again for all your help.

    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

Based on the above, I'll try smoking blackhouse for a while, as it's fairly dry and mild, until i get the hang of things and can start to develop an ability to taste the flavors. I really don't want to take a break and let me tongue heal, but I guess I should. :(

    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

I think she liked it. She gave a little eyebrow raise and a curious "hmm".

    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

Btw, my wife just popped out from putting the kid's to bed, I asked here to take a sip from the pipe and describe the taste, and she said sweet and a bit peaty. Not fair!

    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

Hmm, just googled this and found several threads from this site on the same topic. Didn't come up when I used the sites search. Sorry for the duplicate thread. It looks like lots of people have this issue when they start up. I'll just keep plugging along...if I recall, my first 20 or so cigars...

    Will My Taste Buds adjust?

Hi All, I was wondering if any of you experienced this when you were new to pipe smoking. I feel like I'm not really tasting much flavor when I smoke. I am getting much better at packing and lighting and finding a rhythm, but I can only taste a faint flavor (smells great, though). Not sure if...

    First Pipe Smoked Today: Questions

It was one flake in a rather large bowl. I have no idea how it happened.

How Long to Break In a Briar?

    I remember that commercial!

How Long to Break In a Briar?

Interesting stuff. I've just been doing my best to pack it up the three stage way and then smoke slowly all the way down (or as far as I can). If I only have time for a half bowl, I'll do that, but sans intent with regards to breaking it in. It looks like the two briars I have been smoking are...

How Long to Break In a Briar?

Thanks for the replies! I have a ways to go, but good to know. Why do they coat some bowls, anyway? Is it to prevent burn outs?

How Long to Break In a Briar?

Hi all, I am guessing the answer to this question is "it depends on several factors" and "YMMV", but I was just curious: after how many bowls do you generally consider a new Briar pipe to be broken in? I guess the question would be for both stained and unstained bowls. I'm not there yet, but I...

    Full Strength Non-Aromatic Recommendations

Thank you for asking this. I am new to pipes and was wondering about this same thing. I tried Irish Flake and liked it a lot, and was wondering if there is more to discover on the strong side. Great answers here that will undoubtedly lead to orders placed... Thanks again. Steve

    First Pipe Smoked Today: Questions

I'm already reading about it, looks fascinating, incorporating grain aesthetics and organic shapes with functionality (drool)! Probably need to learn to smoke one properly first...:) I am letting some escudo, OSG, Full Virgina and Irish Flake dry for a couple of days right now and will stick...

    First Pipe Smoked Today: Questions

So, I am a really slow smoker for some reason. I got a smaller pipe ~1.3 x .75, and tried some of Escudo Navy I let dry overnight. I spent about an hour this morning, and had to stop, as work was looming, then finished a whole bowl tonight and it took almost two hours. I love it, it's incredibly...

    First Pipe Smoked Today: Questions

Yes, three hours. Not sure it was in a good way, though...;). I am thinking of at least a couple cobs for now, as I don't want to trash a bunch of briars. Thanks for the link! I understand these are the best when it comes to cobs?

    First Pipe Smoked Today: Questions

Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice and encouragement here. I rubbed some of the OGS, left it out overnight, and smoked it this morning. Still need work on my packing, lighting and other skills (of course), but it went muuuuuuuch better than that first time. Now i need to get another...

    First Pipe Smoked Today: Questions

Had my second bowl this morning with espresso. Tried the blackhouse and the "German" loading method in the same 88. I did a full bowl again, but eased up on the amount. It was much easier to load up and the tobacco was definitely drier than the Orlik I tried yesterday. Anyway, took me about an...
