    Recent visit to Iwan Ries

I’ve ordered from them once online and my experience was totally fine. While there are cheaper and possibly more reliable e-comm options, IR does have stuff in stock that others don’t. Such as Solani, Gawith Hoggarth, etc. it’s part of my rotation of sites I visit when I’m looking for something...

Parking and driving in NYC is even a whole new skill set today with bike lanes, outdoor dining pavilions, and Uber drivers to navigate!

I miss Nat Sherman. I remember that being a beautiful store. But IR won me over and I will stop buy whenever I am back in Chicago, for sure.

I have 1 oz samplers of both Old Toby and Rivendell standing by. I've been smoking my way through one sample bag at a time before formulating an opinion on the tobacco and am excited for those. I think Old Toby will be next. Thanks!

I have been experimenting with some different pipe sizes and types. All of them new. I'm not opposed to estate, but I'd prefer to buy an estate in person and there aren't that many B&Ms near me. The two pipes I mentioned in my intro are my regular pipes - a Dunhill County straight prince (3107)...

I'm a card-carrying member of Mensa. I am in an all-druid raiding guild in World of Warcraft (that I have played for 17 years). I go to the Renaissance Festival every year and dress up for it. I make custom fountain pens on a wordworking lathe. Take your pick, I'm lots of kinds of nerd.

Yes. I stopped by Barclay Rex yesterday and there was only a small selection of pipe tobaccos and each tin was $24+. They had the new Sun Bear in stock but a tin was like $26. They also had some bulk tobacco in jars but the employee working the store didn't know much about them when I asked.

    Recent visit to Iwan Ries

I was in Chicago 2 weeks ago for Lollapalooza and stopped by Iwan Ries. It was my first visit there and everything about it makes me want to go back and visit soon. We were greeted and attended to by Douglas, impeccably attired in a suit and smoking BCA out of a Dunhill. He positively lit up...

    Preferred Lighter

I use a zippo with a pipe insert. It works well but I hate how often I have to refill it. I also have a Kiribi lighter which is beautiful and holds a lot of fuel, but hard to light outdoors where I usually smoke.

    First Pipe, Briar Or Cob?

I have started and stopped smoking pipes 3 different times and only recently did I get a cob. My first forays into pipes were basket briars. My recommendation would be to get a briar and to actually go to a store and shop for one rather than pick one on the internet. While cobs are cheap, i...

Hello friends. I got my first pipe in college with a 2 oz bag of bulk cherry cavendish from Leavitt & Peirce in Cambridge, MA. I had a tough go of keeping it lit so took up cigars instead. About 10 years ago, I got the itch to try again and bought a basket pipe and some tins recommended by an...
