January 2011 - What are you smoking? II

Thanks Cortezattic. The brickwork is coloring, with the spacing in between the bricks showing color, while the bricks display the patina that age brings. For now, it's Murdock's Pipe in the Pete Original. Best to all. http://pipesmagazine.com/members/fred/album/picture/504

    Under the Radar....

This Estate Paul Fischer Prince looks to be in excellent shape and not smoked enough to really need much cleaning up. It displays the simple grace that Paul gave his Meerschaums, even in the traditional shapes such as this Prince. The Prince is an uncommon shape in the Meerschaum community...

January 2011 - What are you smoking? II

Good afternoon. It's Cambridge Flake from Peretti's in the Sea Wall. http://pipesmagazine.com/members/fred/album/picture/594 This estate Bekler has cleaned up nicely and is showing coloration in addition to the patina that age brings to a 25 year old Meerschaum. Lots of Beeswax and smoking...

You Can Smoke Pot, but Not Tobacco in Washington

The times are changing... With both the Feds and state governments desperate for revenue, the excise taxes on both medical marijuana and the business taxes on the dispensaries, we will see more of this. The controversy in the medical community over the appropriate medical necessity of...

    Let's See The Dunhills

Here's the one Dunhill Meerschaum in my modest collection. It's an estate Pipe. http://pipesmagazine.com/members/fred/album/picture/485 Dunhill Meerschaums are scarce. Since the Turkish government put a ban on the export of raw Sepiolite, the Dunhill Meerschaums have been commission...

    Over Clocked Pipes

ChuckW is right about this fix for the metal screw type connectors that make use of synthetic bits. I would not recommend it for Meerschaums with bone screw connectors or derlin push/pull joints. For clarification, I believe that he's referred to heating the bit, with the screw tenon in it.

Briar vs Bruyere, Center vs Centre, those damn English spellings..how come?

Yes, I believe that it was the French that introduced the Bruyere Pipe to the world, so it's really their word. Yes, the story is anecdotal but still a good one, as it survives to this day and frequently shows up in the literature. During that time frame, the French were highly regarded...

To dump, or not to dump...

Most of the time I leave the ash in the Pipe. I'll dump the ash when it gives me a problem with relights due to the depth of the bowl's chamber and/or the smoking characteristics of the Pipe tobacco.

    Seattle Space Needle

I'm not surprised that the food is overpriced and nothing to write home about from the restaurant. Yes Kevin, the misting is a regular feature in the Pacific Northwest. It does rain as well... On average there's about 30 days of clear sunlight a year - but the panoramic view of the...

    Seattle Space Needle

I was there for the 1962 World's Fair as a young man and visited it frequently during the quarter century that I lived in Seattle. In it's early days, there was a restaurant where one could dine and get a rotating panoramic view of the city. Good stuff!

    Tin presentation and blend name

No question about it. The tin art on Solani Silver Flake, blend No 660 is top of the list for me, and the blend is a great smoke... http://www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/by-maker/solani/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=15034

Escudo - Love at First Light

You're welcome BB. Davidoff Royalty is a blend that I've not met anyone who doesn't like it, once you can get them to smoke a bowl... Rumor has it that it was Zino's favorite as well. Tommy, this is the Escudo that all the fuss is about...

Escudo - Love at First Light

Aged Escudo is a good smoke. Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls are smoother and have more depth with a faint fruit top note, where Escudo has the citrus note to it. Out of the Davidoff blends, Royalty is my choice. It's a sublime Oriental blend that evaporates every time a tin gets opened around here.
