Japanese Pipe Artisan Smio Satou on Radio Show of 5/17/2016

This was a fun interview, thanks to Brian, Satou-San and Ryota for working so hard to bring it to us. I particularly appreciated hearing the story of the lacquer and its affect on the final finish and benefits to the longevity of the pipe. It was also cool to learn that much of the Tsuishu that...

    Is this a genuine GBD?

Ah, my bad, when I read that the pipe was unsmoked I assumed that it meant that the pictures were of the pipe in unsmoked condition. That's my error. As to the issue of buffing and polishing; one doesn't need a buffer to do this, as you proved with sand paper. If you did indeed sand the stummel...

    Is this a genuine GBD?

Someone who wanted it to be shiny. Smoking a pipe isn't the only way to dull a finish on a smooth pipe. But let's look at this pipe itself... I read from the OP that the pipe was unsmoked, but those chamber walls look like they've seen heat to me. Further, the pipe stain appears to be uneven...

    Is this a genuine GBD?

I'm with George, in that I think the absence of nomenclature on the shank is more likely due to overzealous buffing than a failure to stamp at the factory. -- Pat

    Must Be Doing Something Wrong......

+1 I'd also suggest that you change up how you're packing a bowl, and then pay attention to your cadence. Slowing down your smoke and learning to sip, and to retrohale, will really help open up the flavours in your tobacco. Remember, if the bowl is too hot to touch, then you're smoking too...

Michael Parks Commission, Beginning To End (PIC HEAVY)

The odds are better, but there is never a guarantee. I'd suggest that briar supplier, selection, and seasoning also play into the likelihood of getting a higher quality finished pipe. But at the end of the day there are flaws that can lay beneath the surface of any block that are only visible...

Where To Buy A Lathe In Canada - Looking At Grizzly G0752

Chris, here is another franchise which sells small shop equipment: http://www.busybeetools.com/pages/Locations.html Hopefully one of our resident pipemakers will chime in to chat about why a metal lathe vs. a woodworking lathe, but I believe at its simplest this decision is about the density...

    West Coast Pipe Show Dinner?

Dave, I'm looking up the info now as I've never been, but if I remember rightly the Saturday night dinner generally has a key-note speaker and is a bit of an event... Didn't Brian Levine host the dinner last year and do a whole bit on the "Fast Five Final Questions"? -- Pat

    John Cotton Blends, Preferences?

Hey there, mso489, I really enjoyed the Smyrna. It was my favourite of the group. I agree with Jud's comments entirely. I'm also predisposed to Latakia blends so no surprise that Smyrna and Bengal Slices are my favourites of the Standard Tobacco Co. offerings. Here is a link to my snapshot...

Sasieni Ashford S Ruff Root (restoration)

Nice job, Al. You have a lovely duo, now. They're a solid addition to your collection. I see what you mean about preferring the taper, but there is something about the saddle stem that I like. -- Pat
