How does one know if the wood is quality? Beyond briarwood, hickory, cherry or pair? Age of wood? Growth rings that are appealing to the eye? Is there a specific direction that the grain should be carved from?- Buescher308

Is that a cob from a local corn field or something you purchased from a supplier?
