    Straight Orientals?

Peretti Tashkent is the one I am aware it is only Oriental with no Virginia or Burley. It has a little bit of Latakia but is minor and in the foreground and also keep in mind Latakia is derived from Oriental. It is a very good blend and it should be tried by anyone looking for Oriental blend.

    Storage Questions

[I'm thinking off simply putting a layer off plastic foil over all the lever lid jars. It really feels as if this should be airtight.] This will be useless as I tested when I started smoking as plastic is not airtight. Putting a double layer aluminum foil under the lid and sealing it with...

    Storage Questions

To keep the tobacco in its tin I use a double aluminum foil placed below the lid and cut just below the border of the lid. Then I seal with electric tape between the aluminum foil and the lid. Tin resealed in this way are still as fresh as when originally opened 2 years ago. If you want to...

Have You Ever Smoked Baked Biscuit?

[Agreed, it takes a bit of prep time, but it's worth it imo. I enjoy mixing the plug with a bit of Grousemoor ribbon. Makes for a better burn and has a grand taste and aroma.] This is a good idea. Actually I have an unopened tin of the ribbon cut. This could give a reason to open it.

Have You Ever Smoked Baked Biscuit?

[I take it your not in the US. I would love to get my hands on some...] Actually I am in the USA. Got from Synjeco in Switzerland. They ship to USA. A little bit pricey but not terrible.

Have You Ever Smoked Baked Biscuit?

Ok, try to think about the smell of freshly baked biscuit and it is what you get smell and taste smoking SW Grousemoor plug. I just had the first bowl yesterday and it is pretty amazing. The smell of the plug is very similar to baked biscuit (many say it is soapy and I can figure out while they...

    Favorite Italian Pipes

Il Duca is awesome particularly for Morta and Olive wood. His pipes are aesthetically magnificent and functionally perfect. Also Spanu (now run by the son as the father passed away 3 years ago) has gorgeous looking briars which notably are grown by the family, as well as nice alternative woods...

What Makes Tobacco a Tobacco Pipe

[I think the headline of this thread is meant to read: What Makes Tobacco A Pipe Tobacco.] Yes. And the comment so far have been interesting. I am really trying to figure out what makes the pipe tobacco so different from the other types of tobacco starting from production to packaging. So far...

What Makes Tobacco a Tobacco Pipe

This comes down from a thread I started few days ago trying to figure out how much tobacco pipe represents the total of tobacco use and if it is grown specifically for pipe use or a byproduct. It is clear a small % of total tobacco (and I would guess probably less than 1%) and it looks like it...

    My First Morta Impressions

[I find VA’s, VAPers and other VA tobaccos to smoke exceptionally well in my Morta pipes. ] Banjo, first of good to see you back on the board. Yes, I think a good Morta should do very well with Virginia tobaccos as being neutral should be able to bring up to subtle nuances of Virginia. I also...

Right Pipe Right Tobacco Right Delicious

As said there is no perfect or even approximate equation also because I think at the end it is a matter of personal taste preference as a combo tobacco/pipe which is great for one guy might not be so for another. Said that I think there are a couple of general ruled which can help at least as a...

How Much Tobacco Pipe Is of % of Total Tobacco Use?

[Chinese tobacco production is about ten times what the U.S. produces. Here's stats by country from 2016.... https://www.statista.com/statistics/261173/leading-countries-in-tobacco-production/] It looks like it is on a subscription only publication.

    Pipe Storing

I try to keep the pipes inside clean as much as possible as I think a clean fresh pipe delivers a better smoke than one with residue from prior smoke, at least this is my feeling. For this in addition to cleaning the pipes with running warm/hot water as described in other threads, after they...

How Much Tobacco Pipe Is of % of Total Tobacco Use?

The tobacco pipe is a very small fraction of the total tobacco production, but how much is it? 3%, 1%, 0.1%... The real underlying reason of the question is, given the overall small amount of pipe tobacco compared to the total tobacco production, if the tobacco pipe in its varieties (virginia...

    My First Morta Impressions

[Are these things any good for VAs?] I just fired her up for the first time yesterday so I don't have too much experience to be authoritative but I feel to say a couple of things. It is generally said that Mortas are best with English/Balkan blends and this is what I started yesterday...

    My First Morta Impressions

[I don’t allow a cake to form in my Morta pipes, I treat them like I would a Meerschaum and they smoke splendidly.] I agree and this is my plan. My understanding is that Morta can break badly with cake as Meerschaum would do. As a matter of fact I don't like cake in any pipe, in the briars just...

    My First Morta Impressions

Tonight I lighted up for the first time my first Morta (an Il Duca by Max Rimensi). Well I have to say Morta is very good. Neutral in non altering tobacco taste (which is what I want), very dry (which I like) and I was surprised that contrary to what I read around it does not get hot, it is...

Is Diamond Treating Their Matches With Something?

[it is rare to find the problems you do.] To be clear I use lighters me too because there are situations where matches are not practical but I can always feel a difference in taste with the lighter, sometime I am even thinking if I could be oversensitive to the butane itself (even if it should...

Is Diamond Treating Their Matches With Something?

[really prefer use matches for lighting as I get better control of the flame and also because no matter how much I put a butane flame away from the chamber it is too hot and I feel burning of the tongue. In the 2nd half the bowl I use Hemp Wick as it burns cool like a match and you can easily...

Is Diamond Treating Their Matches With Something?

Swan Vesta are still the best matches. Expensive and difficult to find (but available on Amazon) but the best. I purchase both the long 3'75'' version and the short 2' version. Generally I use 1 long for charring light and 1 short for the 2nd light. I really prefer use matches for lighting...
