    Hearing Problems?

M Mine are good. They make the difference between having to stand sideways in front of my wife with my hand behind my ear or hearing fairly well from the next room. Still, I have a lot of trouble.... Everything still sounds kind of muffled, and any background noise makes things pretty...

    Hearing Problems?

I tell people that I inherited my deafness. Some from my grandfather on my mother's side, some from Mick Jagger, and some from Sam Colt. Actually, John Browning had more to do with It. And then there are power tools...

Why Did I Start Smoking a Pipe?

Not long after I started college at the U of Nebraska, there was a fellow that smoked a pipe with Borkum Riff in the study hall of the Student Union. (It was a different time back then.) It smelled so good that I'd choose a seat across the table from him, and after awhile I bought a cheap pipe...

    What are You Reading Now?

I just finished reading "Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln" collected and edited by Allen Thorndike Rice, 1886. A fascinating old book about a fascinating man. If you come across a copy, I recommend reading the brief biographical sketches of the contributors in the back as you work your way...

    What are You Reading Now?

Lately, I've been enjoying "The Lunar Men," by Jenny Uglow. It's a rather long, somewhat rambling, but very well written account of a group of men who met during the 1700's timing their meetings around the full moon, as most people did before street lighting became a thing. Some of the most...

    House, Outside Or Both?

I smoke outside by my own choice. Actually, I can get a better smoke inside with no wind, etc, but I tend to accumulate stuff, and I don't want to clean the condensed smoke off everything.

    Solitary or Social Smoker?

I smoke alone. Once a day, I go outside with a churchwarden pipe and an old book and read on my swinging chair. The pipe makes me slow down, and I enjoy reading things I probably wouldn't have the patience for inside, dealing with daily life. I call my little respites outside with my pipe...

    Leave Stems Unattached?

I clean a pipe as soon as I'm done smoking. It generally cools off for maybe 15 minutes before I get to it, but I feel the gunk cleans out easier if it's a little warmish. I separate the stem, clean out the tenon with Qtips, run bristled and then soft pipe cleaners through everything, sweep...

    Collecting Ethos

I smoke pretty much only long pipes because they're great for reading. I call them churchwardens, but I'm not sure if some stretch the "technical boundaries" of the name, being used pipes that I modified with long stems. Anyway, I've got about a dozen, and rotate them so I always have a nice...

Good and Bad Experiences Smoking in Public

I live in a SMALL town in rural Iowa. I haven't had too many comments while sitting outside reading with my pipe, but a new 20 year old neighbor, (who has definitely been around,) told me "i've never seen anybody smoke a pipe before." Recently, the photographer from the local paper stopped and...

Pipe Types and Why I Lean Towards Longstems

Sigmund was saying "I didnt want to fuss with different cleaners." Understandable. It can be a pain having to keep too much stuff handy to clean pipes. Since I almost always smoke long pipes though, I only buy long pipe cleaners. After running a bristled one and a soft one down the stem, I...

Show Me Pipe Rack / Storage Options

I cobbled this thing to keep nine of my churchwardens in as small a space as possible.

The Agony of Day One of My Pipe Fast

Being an outdoor smoker, (by my own choice,) I have a fairly long fast in the winter. My threshold smoking temp is 50 degrees F, and here in Iowa it can go several months without coming close to that. Yeah, I miss it, but it's so nice to light up in the Spring. :)

    Wind Caps

I always smoke outside, and yes, the wind has a strong effect on the length of time my smoke lasts, and the way it tastes. I suppose NO wind would be best, but I like a gentle breeze, although even that has a noticeable effect. Before going out for my daily smoking-reading-run away from home...

Pipe Types and Why I Lean Towards Longstems

I smoke churchwardens almost exclusively. Mine are all plastic or vulcanite stems. I really don't think they smoke significantly cooler, since the smoke is only in the stem for a split second, but they're ergonomically PERFECT for reading. And maybe I like sitting outside with a book looking...

Need Some Recommendations for Quality Aromatics!

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH... My all around favorite is Cornell & Diehl's Autumn Evening. Your mileage may vary and all that.

How Long does a Bowl Take?

I'm sort of a puffer, and I always smoke outside with a book. I couldn't care less how often I relight, I keep my Zippo in my cup holder, (with just enough whiskey to occasionally wet my tongue.) and although I tend of puff clouds of smoke, I smoke cool and relight whenever it goes out. I...

    What are You Reading Now?

I just finished reading "Two Years Before the Mast" by Richard Henry Dana. I'd long heard of this book, but figured it was a novel. Not long ago, I learned that it was all factual, telling of Dana's two year voyage working as a common seaman on a trip from Boston, down around the Horn of South...

    Pipe Smoking and Cancer

OK, I was the third poster is this thread and hung back because it was difficult for me to actually decipher the statistical analysis. I think Makhorkasmoker in post 32 gave a pretty good analysis. The danger of pipe smoking is real, as we all know, but not catastrophic. That being said...

    Pipe Smoking and Cancer

Like Fireground Piper, I have difficulty determining the actual degree of increases in the various cancers by the way the statistics are presented. I'm interested, but unlikely to toss my pipes, much due to my age (74) and very moderate pipe smoking. I'll be watching this thread...
