Your Best Cheap Pipe; Here's Mine; Let's See Yours!

Well, I probably have to modify the above a bit…. I have a few newer ones than 30 years old, but they were ones I inherited from my father-in-law. A couple of those are less than 30 years old…. but they were free to me.

Your Best Cheap Pipe; Here's Mine; Let's See Yours!

Hmm. Maybe I am not allowed to play this round, but…. As all my pipes at least 30 years old or older, they were all less than $50 and most were less than $30 when o got them back when. If I were to count them, I probably have somewhere around 100.

How Often do you Really Need to Clean your Pipe?

My answer is more ambiguous….. I clean my pipes WHEN it feels USEFUL to do so. In other words, if the pipe is performing to expectations, no cleaning is needed. If I notice something less than desired, I will take some level of corrective action.

    Pipe Windchimes

Seems possible, although I am not sure if the wooden chime sound would be particularly melodic unless you had an array of very different pipes. At some level it seems a bit “sad” to relegate pipes to this task, but…. perhaps if you only string them through the stem, shank, and out the...

Tom Eltang Celebrates 50 Years of Pipe Making

Hmm. If referencing the pipe quilt on the bed above… shouldn't it be “rest-icated” 😉

    Overclocked Stem Self-correcting?

Beginning in the early 1960s, LHS offered a “trendy” new gizmo on the stems of some of their pipes called the TTM (tenon temperature monitor). Its use was to help the pipe smoker know when the bowl had reached optimum stoking temperature for the greatest tobacco flavor. It was akin to the...

How do you Hold your Pipe?

No center position for me. Right and left alternate, with a greater percentage on the right unless I am driving. Left is more typical while driving the truck or car though….. perhaps because it is closer to the slightly open window, I suppose. And, also left in the vehicle more frequently...

Do you Cover the Bowl when you Smoke?

I have done this regularly. Sometimes a finger (or two), or a thumb. But I will also “palm” the bowl (like it suggests, using the palm of my hand). For me, these techniques can restrict airflow to help “up” the combustion of the ember if I do so loosely, or a more tight seal can be used to...

    Newbie Questions.

Hello JTH…. I am sure you will get many different perspectives to your questions. They may be similar to what I write or they may differ significantly because there are all manner of experiences folks will have had. That said, for me: 1. Indulging in tobacco, be it a cigar or a pipe can...

    What's your Ideal Grinder?

I usually prefer my grinder with ham, turkey, and roast beef, piled high with onions and some sort of cheese…. baked a bit in the oven before squashing both halves together. *😀 Actually, never used a grinder for any tobacco….. just “ground” it bwtween my fingers till it was a consistency that...

    Stem Cleaning.

In my ~45 years of smoking a pipe…. the answer I would give in all honesty is….. when it feels like it would be helpful to do so. In other words, no real set time. For me, on an average pipe, I might run one through BEFORE trying it out the first time to identify if there are any...

    House, Outside Or Both?

I used to smoke both inside and outside, but perhaps about 15 years ago or so, I ended up changing to only outside (other than the time I occasionally now visit a cigar lounge). No particular impetus as to why….. just gradually happened….. probably because I enjoy having another “excuse” to...

Preferred Bowl Size For Burley Blends

I tend to think bigger is better with burley’s when I have enough time to enjoy a large bowl.

    Leather Bound Pipes

The aesthetic appearance of a leather wrapped pipe when the leather and pipe are in good condition is something that can look nice. I have two different leather-clad beasts in my collection. I do not smoke them often, mostly because I worried some ABOUT keeping the leather looking nice...

    How Slow is Slow?

It all depends on mood for me. My mood determines the length of time. If I am in an aggravated or intense mood, I can finish a bowl in 15 minutes easily. Calmer, tranquil moods can extend to a hour or so. As long as it is enjoyable or helpful, time is relative.

Pipe and/or Cigar Smoking Friendly Places in London, Ontario?

In a few weeks I have a work trip to London, Ontario and I was hoping to learn of any pipe and/or cigar smoking friendly places. My searching this far has not turned up much. An indoor “lounge” or an outdoor patio area would be nice. And, if there is such a place that also serves beer or...

    Mail Call!

I would suggest going alphabetically. Makes it easier to remember.🙂

    "Shag Pipes"

Hmm. They are interesting, for certain. But, how in the hell could they drill a hole UNDER the bottom of the bowl and have it come up from the other side of the stem?!! Are you sure that the second hole, distal to the shank is not a “blind” hole….. like if the drill operator was over zealous...

    First “Cigar Bar” Experience

Even though I am a grey-haired and bearded old “codger”, I still sometimes get to have a new experience or two. In regards to smoking, pipes and pipe tobaccos have been at least 95% of my effort over the decades. I have had a few occasional cigars over the decades, but truth-be-told I suspect...

There Was Once a Time I Loved Long Smokes

I wouldn’t see any problem with your just smoking a bowlful of whatever blend you want in the pipes you have….. and just stop when the time length you feel comfortable with occurs. You could then: A) put the pipe aside and pick it up again later if you do not mind a bowl that has sat for some...
