***What Are You Smoking, June 2020?***

Samuel Gawith Grousemoor in my Grandpa's old Brigham 5 dot. This is my favourite aromatic to date. Virginia + Floral Essence. Lovely!

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

Amphora Virginia in a brand new Brigham Sportsman billiard. First time trying a straight Virginia. I love it. 2nd favourite behind Amphora Kentucky.

    Touchy Subject

I would say yes. For me personally, it acted as a metaphorical medicine for a time. But... it could have easily turned into another huge problem. I've seen what that is like for people I care about. It's not pretty. Regarding my own experiences, I submit the following huge caveats: First, I...

    Touchy Subject

The pandemic hasn't affected my level of drinking, which is currently quite minimal. Lockdown hasn't negatively affected me personally. Circumstances 3 or 4 years ago, however, did contribute to my drinking getting out of hand. Everyone is Different The important thing to recognize is that...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

Last night, a bowl of Amphora Green (Rich) in my Grandpa's Brigham 5-dot bent apple that I refurbished. It's not a fancy tobacco but there's something enjoyable about it.

When, Where, and Why Do You Smoke?

Where? Front porch or while walking around the block. When? Evenings after work and weekends if the weather is good. Even 0°c on a windless day is fine. With cigars, it was 1 or 2 per month. With the pipe, it is turning out to be 2 or 3 times per week. Why? Savouring a lovingly-grown and...

Removing Years of Grease from a Pipe

Thanks, Karam. My Dad always called my Grandpa (his father-in-law), "The man of the $20 solution". Grandpa could fix almost anything for $20 or less. Often $0 using parts from his shop.

Removing Years of Grease from a Pipe

He's still going and is almost 90! 6 years ago, he left his home of 53 year to move in with us. That's when I brought the pipes. Last year, he moved to a long-term care facility. I can't wait to show him once the lockdown is over and I can visit him again.

Removing Years of Grease from a Pipe

Thanks to everyone for the excellent advice. It took a month of work. Tonight, I had my first smoke out of the pipe I used to watch Grandpa smoke 35 years ago. It's a Brigham 5-dot made in Canada with a vulcanite stem. Vulcanite feels so good in the mouth. Strangely enough, the stem won't go...

So New to Pipe Smoking, My First Pipe Hasn't Arrived Yet

Thank you for your kind welcome. The community is wonderful. I've been a casual cigar smoker for about 5 years, getting up to about 2/month over the last year. Predominantly Cuban with a rich earthy flavour that is well-balanced. Briefly tried cigarettes at age 16. Tasted awful. Cigars are...

So New to Pipe Smoking, My First Pipe Hasn't Arrived Yet

Tried my first bowl of Amphora Green (Rich) today. It was delicious. I'd say it's my second favourite so far. Nutty and earthy.

So New to Pipe Smoking, My First Pipe Hasn't Arrived Yet

Just to report back. I've now tried: Amphora Absolute x 3 Amphora Kentucky x 2 Amphora Latakia x 1 While only 6 bowls in, I'm thoroughly enjoying this. It's better than cigars. The Kentucky is my favourite so far. So much so that I've ordered a tin of HH Old Dark Fired. I'm loving the...

***What Are You Smoking, April 2020?***

Just had a half bowl of Amphora Latakia. It's my first time trying it. The smokiness is fascinating. Smokier smoke. Tastes like camping.

What Do the Brigham Dots Mean in Practical Terms?

I've been looking at this treasure trove of information. Wow, there is a lot here. I didn't see answers to my specific questions but I did find a lot of great answers to questions that I didn't even know to ask.

    My Olive Wood Experiment

What a beautiful piece! Wow! Are you planning to smoke it or keep it for display? If the former, I'd be curious to know how you find the olive wood compared to briar in terms of heat, durability, friendliness and flavouring. I'm extremely new to pipe smoking but with any topic I find the...

What Do the Brigham Dots Mean in Practical Terms?

I would love to hear what you think of it. The Acadian pipes are so beautiful. They let the wood and the carving stand on their own. The straight apple is a nice, elegant shape.

***What Are You Smoking, April 2020?***

Amphora Blue (Kentucky) in my nigh-virgin Brigham Sportsman. First time trying it and only my 4th bowl of pipe tobacco ever. I'm still getting used to the difference compared with cigars. Cigars smell mild unlit and smoke with a lot of flavour. The two tobaccos I've tried are opposite...

What Do the Brigham Dots Mean in Practical Terms?

I called Brigham Enterprises today and they were helpful. My interpretation of what they said is: Briar Every pipe they make has good quality briar that should last a very long time. The Algonquin listing "highest grade" briar is a misprint. They reserve the best of the best briar for their...

What Do the Brigham Dots Mean in Practical Terms?

That's a great summary of the data! I'm also contemplating calling Brigham to see if they can fill in the blanks. I doubt they'll take a call from a consumer but you never know. I'm also looking at ordering another two pipes this week. Brigham, of course. One for a friend, a second for me.
