Don't underestimate the tactile pleasure (and reliability) of a quality lighter. Better off buying one good lighter than a bunch of cheap ones that will fail. Old boys are great.- PaulDM

Filters and Pipe Cleaners
I use a pipe cleaner even with a filter pipe. I put it gently in the stem just until it hits the filter - keeps the front of the stem nice and dry,- PaulDM

Cellaring Tobacco
I keep everything in tins other than what is in my current rotation (current way too many). Those are stored in mason jars, no special way of sealing.- PaulDM

How/What Beverages do You Pair with Your Pipe?
Coffee goes with almost anything I find. If I want something cold I like coconut water - I find that it really cleanses the palate. I never drink alcohol when I smoke (pipes or cigars) - I'm extra cautious and avoid it out of concern that it increases possibility of nasty oral health problems...- PaulDM

Smoking a Pipe First Thing in the Morning
Never first thing. I will occasionally smoke in the car (a mild hazlenut aro) to make the long commute more bearable, and in the summer on my deck with coffee after a workout.- PaulDM

Is a Zippo Suitable for Pipes?
Zippos are very cool, a pleasure to hold in the hand, reliable, windproof, and not a problem in terms of fouling the tobacco (that's nonsense). But they do dry out really quickly and I haven't found that the gaskets really help that much. I don't smoke that often so that factor alone leads me...- PaulDM

Bent or Straight Stem?
Can't say with certainty that a Canadian smokes cooler. I am skeptical that a longer pipe does much to cool the smoke. I think overall construction, cadence, packing method etc is much more important. What I do like is that it definitely keeps smoke out of my eyes and I find it very comfortable.- PaulDM

Bent or Straight Stem?
I have come to prefer longer straight pipes. Less likely to get smoke in the eyes, which I do find to be an occasional problem with shorter bent pipes. Canadian has become my favorite shape.- PaulDM

I "only" have about 25 pipes - including a few cobs and basket pipes. I smoke 2-3 times a week. Some of the pipes get smoked a few times a year. But I agree just not worth selling them. I like to see voluminous clouds of smoke. I am much like the OP - I tend to freight train it through the first 1/3 of the bowl and then I notice the bowl is heating up and slow down. Pipe Smoking and Exercise
Genetics probably play a role. I do find that if I smoke more than 3x per week I develop a slight cough (no I don't inhale), probably from the secondary smoke. I may just be more sensitive than most. So I try to keep it to 3X ish. I am 55 and pretty active - regular strength training, 50...- PaulDM
