    A Match for Capstan Blue?

About 507C. Long ago, I bought it in quantity, jarred it in smaller increments, went through it slowly. I think when I finished it, it was 10 years old, and I was stunned at how well it had aged. personally I think it’s the best Virginia flake out there for the dollar. Really inexpensive.

    Aging and Pricing Thoughts

Steve Fallon, a.k.a. Pipestud, has been selling aged 100 gm tins of McClelland Christmas Cheer, for $100 and up, for many years. Translates to $28/ounce. Just one example of hundreds of similar, both on his website, this forum, and elsewhere. Crazy ? Well..... I only smoke one bowl of Va...

    A Sherry Evening

Every night after dinner I read and smoke. I sip amontillado sherry all the while, tiny sips every few minutes, which for me goes really well with tobacco, clears the palate and enhances the next puffs. I buy the stuff by the case. Used to be Sandemann, but that is now unavailable where I...

    Any Castello Comparable pipes?

I have 4 or 5 Don Carlos pipes, all estates, which have been noticeably superior smokers for me. Not better than my Castellos, but very good. They are thin on the market these days, not sure why. Certainly less $ than Castellos. Have also had good luck with Ser Jacopos.

    Watch City Va/Pers

Old dominion flake is outstanding. Really outstanding. I never smoke aromatics, but Nor’Easter is outstanding in an aromatic kind of way. It’s a great change up smoke. I’ve never smoked any other tobacco like it.

    Why Some Briar Gets Hot

It remains a mystery. I don't puff hard, or pack tight, and the bowls are typically at least 13/16 and often more, as I prefer larger bowls for a longer smoke. Only flakes. If these pipes were basket pipes then it would make more sense to me, but one was a GBD and one was a Charatan...

    Why Some Briar Gets Hot

o k I'm sure this has been discussed before, but since I don't live here on the web, I've not seen it. I've owned many pipes over the decades, and two of them, both estates, both reputable British marques, were really very hot to the hand when smoked. No, I'm not a fast puffer. I smoke va...

Who has a David Jones Pipe?

I bought one roughly 20 years ago, I think it was a bent billiard, smooth. It was nicely shaped and a good smoker. I probably smoked it for six or eight years. (I don’t know whether this happens to other smokers, but sometimes a pipe will, just somehow lose it. Has this happened to any of you...

🎄The Official Unofficial PipesMagazine Secret Santa 2023 🎅

OMG you people are batshit crazy. I am a PMSS virgin. Just received gift from.... anonymous. I had stipulated no Pease, so I got corn and carrots, which should provide an interesting smoke. Lucky me I got some Cap'n Black Grape ...... I have an unsmoked 1951 Dunhill, wondering how I'd...

🎄The Official Unofficial PipesMagazine Secret Santa 2023 🎅

Hi Steve I ordered some tobacco from you maybe 6 weeks ago, and received it no problem. Maybe your shipping department had a substitute worker that day ? The next most recent order might have been a year ago, don’t recall, but I received that too. Then again I don’t know exactly when Maine...

🎄The Official Unofficial PipesMagazine Secret Santa 2023 🎅

In the past couple of years, if I try to order tobacco from Smoking Pipes, they tell me they can't ship to Maine. Maybe a new state law that I missed. On the other hand, ordering from Watch City or Pipestud has never been a problem. Go figure. Fortunately I no longer really have to...

What’s the deal with Rattray’s Marlin Flake?

I recently opened a tin of MF, I think it had 10 years of age. Moisture content was close to perfect. Rubbed out a bit of it for my evening smoke, let it dry a few hours. Perfect smoke, no more than usual problem keeping it lit.

    Virginia flakes and sugar content

Just opened a tin of Ashton Brindle Flake 1995. Made by McClelland. Good round full mellow Va, no bite, but short on that sweet note that I look for in a Va. Smoked in several pipes. No sweet note. So my question is : among the various types and shades of virginias, what are the...
