I am in Academia, so wear a jacket, vest, and tie every day for work. Pipe goes in the right jacket pocket, pouch of tobacco in the left, lighter goes in a vest pocket. I switch out to a new pipe the next day. Simple and straightforward.
Some of mine have a nice thick cake and some have a thin barely there cake...I honestly don't notice a huge difference simply because I don't smoke my pipes too hot. If you fall into the camp that believes you need the cake to stop burnout, then the simple solution is just don't smoke it too...
That's my take as well. I'll smoke outside all day long but I always move away from large groups, and I only smoke indoors at home when I know it's not going to bother anyone.
