A "sweet" English
I find McClelland's British Woods to have a subtly sweet, almost lemony undertone clinging to the shirttails of the latakia. Not very pronounced, but always noticeable, and I'd guess more to do with the interplay of the virginias and orientals than just the Vas alone.- dryseason91

Question about Virginias and English!!!
My tuppence worth: if you're a novice and wanting to get into virginias, I'd suggest starting out with a VaPer (virginia-perique blend). As others have said, a straight VA might seem bland to an initiate palate, and they tend to put everyone, but especially beginners, in jeopardy of tongue burn...- dryseason91

Regarding an abrupt absence of taste + Getting the most out of aromatics
Welcome to the forum, Mephisopheles (great name and avatar, by the way.) Yours is an unusual problem. Generally the issue is that the first few bowls of a new pipe taste bad, and the only solution for that is to keep smoking until the wood is seasoned.
