Think you on to something here. Carnauba wax
Almost all briar pipes have a coating of carnuba wax when new. It has a high melting point and is food safe, in other words perfect for a pipe. If your looking to keep your pipes shiney consider picking up some Renaissance wax. You can just wipe it on and buff it to a nice shine.- DevilDuck

Zippo Butane Pipe Lighter Insert
