I just added another PSB set. I like the dark smooths but when I go pipe hunting on Smoking Pipes I always start with “Peterson PSB”

So this’ll give me two sets of PSB and 2 individual PSB plus the two oddball Dark Smooths.
Is their PSB vs regular sandblast just in the stain and depth/deftness of the blast, or are pipes sorted by apparent grain quality into which gets which?🤔

Here's a passage from Peterson via a Mark Irwin article from a few years ago that may answer.

"With this in mind, we developed the new Peterson Special Blast, or PSB grade. Each sandblasted Peterson pipe is sorted in two stages. The initial grading designates a bowl for sandblasting. Once it's been sandblasted, it’s sorted again and placed with its appropriate grade. Bowls designated PSB receive their grade in this second phase. Since its inception in March, fewer than 1% of our regular production pipes have earned the designation. They are truly special pieces. While Supreme is still the highest designation for our sandblasted pipes, our PSB stamp denotes sandblasted bowls of exceptional quality and character. They tend to be craggy and deep, evocative of old-school English or modern artisan sandblasts, and are most often paired to sterling silver bands or mounts, hand-applied by our talented smiths."

That’s interesting, that they’re already pulled for blasting (ie weren’t passing the muster for the smooth grades) but once they see what they’ve got they designate what will get the PSB blast.
Now throw in that somewhere in there of the first blasted stummels they have to pull more to make Ioras and Barley’s probably.
Sykes is a smart guy😉

I haven't seen a lot of consistency in the blasts of the Barleys, PSBs and Ruas. There was a Rua 160th on ebay recently that was pretty much a horror. The PSBs are sometimes great...sometimes not. The Barleys are almost always garbage - no offense if you have one and love it, but in terms of a blast, they aren't generally all that great.
