I tried with the regular nozzle and it was not ideal with a pipe. I did the conversion for the first time and it was honestly pretty simple. The parts are super small so you have to be careful when disassembling. But you can get a pipe nozzle and overhaul kit on eBay for like $15.
i had the ARS arse do the conversion. expensive but easy on my end.. tasty stuff that dunhill propane and butane mix gas.

but its nice to have a lighter that expensive.

Yeah I’m sure paying someone to do it is like $100 by them time all is said and done. I figured I’d just buy the tools and do it myself since I’ll end up buying a few more over the coming years. And they do seem to be pretty nice lighters.

They can be finicky, though. I haven’t spent enough time fully disassembling mine and dialing them in, I just did the needle conversion and swapped out some old seals and springs. The silver barley lights first try every time and the flame is super consistent at where I had it dialed in with the gas key. The gold one sometimes takes a few tries, and if it’s left sitting for a while there can be a big flame that jumps out and I have to fiddle with the gas key to get it settled in. Not sure why, but it’s not a huge deal for me.

They are expensive relative to a lot of lighters, but mine were still cheaper than the Old Boy I bought brand new a few months ago. 🤷‍♂️

the gold one sounds like it needs new seals.

my converted one is a gold cane, early production. When it left to go to ARS, it had the valve stem in the fill port. It came back minus the valve stem. fills up fine though.

I have a S type dress i cant fill as I dont have the fill adapter, my one can of dunhill butane didnt come with it. And I have a mint condition japan made dunhill gold dot with everything from the factory, that holds gas fine. Just dont have the flints.

Oh that’s lame that they sent it back missing a part. Unacceptable, quite frankly. And yeah making sure you have the right butane/fill adapters/flints is definitely important. I believe I’m using the Dunhill Reds in both of mine. I’ve only ever used Xikar Purofine in my lighters, and it seems to run fine in these.

skip the Xikar. its crap. the taste is bad.

Dunhill butane is a mix of butane and propane. It lubricates the system properly. And from what I have read, you CAN use non dunhill butane once in a while, it will actually gum up the mechanisms.

SO use DUNHILL butane. Its a dunhill, why use something less?

Good to know, I didn’t realize that. I guess I’ll have to get some Dunhill butane then.
