Was the rustification shown on the ebay listing?
Yes that was visible and even though I knew that ribands were all smooth, the price was low enough to give it a try and see if it wasn’t some kind of a weird old pipe that they decided to rusticate because of a sandpit or something like that. The repair was 100% invisible - I know because that was my first thought. I might have been a little bit too trusting since the pipe came from one of the most respected guy in europe

I have 3 more tries - two more blue ribands and a special straight grain are going to be joining the party soon and if all three have some weirdness about them i will officially give up...

Wishing you better luck this time.
It’s worth your while persisting with Comoys - they are amongst the elite Britwoods.
Look out for Selected Straight Grain, Special Straight Grain and Straight Grain designations. Even though they won’t have the “Comoy” stamp they can surpass Blue Ribands if you’re chasing grain

Didn't some of those "straight grain" designations have fills? Not counting the Blue Riband of course.

Those designations were Specimen Straight Grain “rejects”.
I have a few and in most cases the fills are tiny sand pits.
They had high standards back then.
I've heard one had to be careful with some of the old Comoy "straight grain" designations. I never got it figured out but I was told some of them weren't as high of a grade as one would presume with that designation.

I've had this Grand Slam for quite a few years but I can't remember if I posted it on this site or not. I got it very cheap as it had a crack in the bowl and it looked like it had a repair band on it. I glued and clamped the crack and it's smoked fine since then, even if it looks like shite. But obviously the pipe has little value now. I couldn't see a crack in the end of the shank anywhere so I don't know if the band is just there for decoration. It's stamped Sterling London so it may have been added on here in the US. I got rid of the stinger as I had no use for it, and I believe I sent it to Al as he said if I didn't want it he'd take it. The stem logo looks a little wonky as far as the color is concerned too. Whatever, I like it and it smokes good, I'm just posting it for your entertainment. 😜

I'll second Larry's comment on Marty Pulver. Very honest and ethical.

I checked the nomenclature as the grain is pretty mundane.

It’s a Traditional (a much lower grade) and not a Specimen Straight Grain as listed.

Very, very naughty of the vendor, if it’s done knowingly
That's not the pipe.
I did tell the seller of the Tradition that it was not listed correctly, he did not update the listing.
