I went to Catholic school and our principal had a good sized leather paddle strop that we students ccalled “the strap”. If you really messed up you’d have to hold out your hands to receive a few lashes.
Catholic primary and secondary/boarding education.
The strap was certainly a well-remembered feature as was a sharp rap on the knuckles or finger tips with a wooden ruler.
No "sparing the rod" at those institutions

I remember when people could speak and write in complete sentences, had full grasp of proper grammar, syntax etc., and had enough of an attention span to get through more than two or three words without zoning out like they're on some kind of experimental drug or something.

Coincidentally, I also remember a time when Idiocracy seemed like a comedy movie. Now it just looks like straight prophecy.

Before mobile phones and headphones/ear buds people got together to enjoy music and conversations were private.
Now the whole train carriage or bus gets to hear of last night's doings with the boyfriend whether you wish to or not.
Which reminds me of a story.

In the early 1990’s I had cofounded a digital visual effects studio at Warner Brothers.

Our receptionist was a skinny Goth girl who was bright, funny, intelligent, and extremely foul mouthed.

One morning she got a call from a girlfriend, and forgetting that she had left on the intercom, launched into a highly detailed description of the acrobatic sexual romp she had engaged in the night before with a guy she had met at a bar. She went on for about three spectacular minutes before she became aware that she was broadcasting the details throughout the entire facility.

There was an embarrassed “Oh shit! OH SHIT!!!” before she killed the intercom, following which the whole studio erupted with applause.

And kids could make change without the damn register doing the simple S I M P L E math. The looks of confusion when they try just fuel my vexation with public education.

I remember when some of the games in the arcade had built in (or added on later) ashtrays. I remember one cabinet had a small piece of sort of zig zag shaped miniature corrugated metal on it. Perfect for resting your cigarette without burning anything.

I remember using a road atlas to drive to faraway places. I also remember being able to get lost (for better or worse).

In a lot of ways the world seems a lot less grand than it once did. Obscure, "out-of-the-way" places are on google maps street view. And there's probably a reddit.
