From the website of America’s oldest pipe shop, Iwan Ries & Co.:

Mastro Geppetto smooth and textured pipes were created by Guidi as an affordable alternative to Ser Jacopo pipes, but there are far more similarities between the two brands than differences. For example, both are handmade by Ser Jacopo's craftsmen using carefully aged Extra Extra (XX) grade Italian briar and the time taken to produce them are virtually identical. Also, stems are hand cut from rod plexiglass (AKA acrylic) for both lines. The two main cost-saving differences lay in the briar and draft hole ~ only Plateaux briar is used to produce Ser Jacopo pipes and the draft holes are drilled with a special flexible drill.”
A point of clarification - I would think not all Ser Jacopos are drilled with "a special flexible drill". I believe that a curved drilling technique is used on certain SJ bent pipes but not straight pipes or bents than can be drilled with a straight drill. I bet this blurb, which I think can be found on Pipedia, is a mistranslation. In my opinion, the original MG series, discontinued for many years, while having fewer shapes were mostly built better than today's MG offerings. That dublin canadian posted by Searock Fan looks like one from the original series. Great looking pipe.

That’s exactly my sense.

Here’s another one of my Geppetto’s. Nice big bowl sitter. Great for Latakia blends.
